This is a professional line of oil paint formulated to the highest standards. These oils feature high pigment load and excellent mixing power. Color intensities replicate those of handcrafted, limited edition oils produced prior to the invention of the collapsible tube in the 1840s. The consistency is silky, not oily. This enables the artist to paint the thinnest layers or thick impasto brushstrokes with ease.

Using techniques dating back to the days of the Old Masters, Michael Harding creates powerful, intense colors of paint that are both beautiful and durable. No fillers or extenders are used. No driers are added to even up the drying time of each pigment within the oil. This ensures against brittleness, cracking, and wrinkling.

All colors but one in the line are ground in a grade of refined cold pressed linseed oil that is chosen for its neutral acidity to ensure permanence. Titanium White No. 1 is ground in safflower oil.

Lead Whites — Due to European regulations the 250 ml size of Cremnitz White (Linseed Oil), Cremnitz White (Walnut Oil), Flake White No. 1, and Foundation White now come in cartridges. The cartridges must be used with a caulking gun which can be purchased at hardware stores.

Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

My husband & I are art instructors & have been for over 30 yrs. Just before we moved we found these oil paints at Art Media Store in Beaverton,OR. Now we are moved to Idaho and unable to find them. In trying to contact the previous store, we found it had been purchased by Dick Blick. We took a chance & were happy that Dick Blick now carried these exceptional paints.

Their pigments are exceptional. Their tinting strength is way above average. There is a range of colors that gives everyone what they are looking for - and some we hadn't heard of before.

We love the Titanium White. It far surpasses any Titantium we've used in the past. It is the right consistancy and tints beautifully. Only a little is needed compared to other whites which often require a lot of paint to do the job. We were giving students samples of our Titanium White to use and ran out quickly. The students prefer it too.

We are glad that Dick Blick continues to carry this brand of paint.

These are great paints -- high quality across the line. If you ever question what pigments are used, go to the Harding website and look up the color charts.
The reason I give 4 stars is that the caps are defective. The seat of the cap is not deep enough to handle the length of threads on the paint tube. What this means is that when screwing the cap closed, it pushes the thin plastic cap lid up and breaks the top of the cap off. You can avoid this by not screwing the caps all the way down. Certain tubes have this problem, others don't. I have broken the caps on 4 of the nine tubes I purchased in the first week of purchase.

Genuine Naples Yellow -- Excellent!

Very few artists' paint manufacturers make genuine Naples yellow (lead antimonate) anymore, so I was excited to see that Michael Harding was offering these in two shades which I now have happily in my palette. Truly an excellent paint (lean and fast drying) and really great value -- roughly $20 cheaper per tube compared to those being marketed by a couple of other manufacturers who still offer this genuine historical pigment.

Good: Great selection of paints in a nice quality tube and cap. The paint itself is very nice! Thick with pigment and pure high grade cold pressed linseed oil as a binder makes these paints one of the best Dick Blick has to offer. The price may look high but in comparison to other high end companies M. H. paints are less expensive for the same quality. His whites are to die for. The lead with walnut oil is great stuff! The titanium number one is pw4 and pw6 in safflower yet still very nice. All M.H. paints go on smooth.

Bad: In my opinion there isn't any except maybe a few more colors to choose from. The M.H. company does each color so well that you wish they made hundreds of colors so you wouldn't ever have to order from another company ever again.

Colors to try: Any of his natural (earth) colors are awesome, cremnitz white in walnut and titanium white in Safflower #1, Crimson lake (most beautiful transparent red I have in my studio), genuine naples light and dark, cadmium red light and cadmium yellow golden are perfect colors!

After using most other brands of oil paints out there I discovered Harding's paint. Although expensive, I consider it value for the money and have never been disappointed with the opening of each tube.
