Fits my needs

Comments about Martin Universal Design Just Stow-It Messenger Bag:
I am taking art classes and have to haul all my supplies back and forth. This bag holds everything I need. In fact, I pack so much into it that it is pretty heavy, which is the only negative. Only suggestion I have is not to put the brush carrier in the slot designed for it on the outside of the bag. Mine slid out and I thought I had lost it and all my expensive brushes. Fortunately it slid out when I was going up steps in my garage to my house and I later found it.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

JUST OKAY, COULD BE BETTER
from Milwaukee, WI
The bag itself was just okay, it is kind-of clunky and hard to carry around. However it does fit a lot of stuff.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I love this bag!
from Huntington MA
I have a classic messenger bag that I was using to carry my supplies to classes I was teaching and when traveling. I liked it a lot, but the rounded corners weren't a good fit for the mostly rectangular objects I was carrying. I decided to check for available alternatives when I was placing an order with Dick Blick and came across this bag. It looked like it would be at least as good as the bag I had been using, which was getting a little tired. The price was also quite attractive, as were a lot of the 'extra' features. I decided to take a chance on it. I'm really glad I did. The construction and materials are really solid and the design is very well thought out. As I hoped, the shape of the bag is much better suited to the things I'm carrying than its predecessor. I haven't used a lot of the thoughtful features - the brush holders, the laptop pocket, the removeable hanging pocketed organizer, the tripod straps - but the ones I have used - the bottle holders - work well and are welcome additions. The bag holds more than the previous messenger bag (a neat trick since they're the same dimensions) and is comfortable to carry, either by the handle on the lid or by the shoulder strap.

Big disappointment...useless features...
NOT AS IDEAL AS YOU WOULD WISH. First, this is merely a modified laptop bag. It will hold up to a 12X16 watercolor block. The envelop for paints does not really hold the tubes securely but very loosely. Three brush holders when one is needed and so a lot of space is wasted. the two Water bottle pockets are too small to hold a water bottle. More wasted space when zip pockets would be better. The bag is heavy and this negates its main attractiveness, which is for outdoor use.The clips attaching the shoulder strap are cheap brittle plastic and will not hold up long. I returned mine and simply use a laptop bag, which, ironically, is better because lighter and the zip pockets more useful than the water bottle sleeves that replace them on this Martin 'just stow it.'

Better, cheaper stuff out there
from Portland, or
I ordered the Avlian messenger bag from this same website, 20 dollars cheaper. This bag is good but I found that trying to carry 3 textbooks plus 2 sketchbooks and 2 ninja rolls and sometimes my laptop that this just can't do it all. The new bag I got and hold up too 55 lbs. I even put it to the test by putting nearly 70 lbs worth of weight and it didn't buckle. I did the same with this and the strap broke. I walk a good 5 miles every day and I. We'd something that can carry what I need plus more. But it was unable to stand the wear.

THE ONLY PROBLEMS WERE "ARTIST ERROR"
from The beautiful southern OREGON coast
The set is without a doubt, the best I've ever seen. It is absolutely wonderful. HOWEVER, it is NOT indestructible. On a particularly crammed full flight in which they took away all carry-ons, I got my bag back with a broken shoulder strap clip and a torn zipper on the brush case. I fixed the strap by purchasing a couple of CARIBENERS (might as well as replace both) and put the brush case back together with Velcro and rubber bands. I have now found a replacement brush case for $7.00. I live on the road with my art supplies and I CANNOT FILL ALL THE POCKETS in this bag. It is BUILT EXTREMELY WELL but if you work yours like I work mine, I'd suggest some preventive measures as outlined above. Also, consider a SMALL PIECE OF DOUBLE SIDED VELCRO between the brush case and the bag...in a crowd, it can be pushed out of its otherwise secure straps. I love this so much I bought one for my 80+ year old mother who often joins me on flights. GOTTA BUY THIS ONE!

Holds a LOT of stuff!!
from Chicago, IL
I bought this to haul art supplies to class when I got tired of my artbin shelves breaking on me. This held more stuff in a compact setup and is comfortable to carry, over the shoulder so my hands are free to carry canvases, etc. I was very pleased when I switched from painting to pastels and it also accommodated 3 pastel boxes and a large pencil box. I'm no longer in class, but use this to organize and store a lot of drawing and painting supplies, and it's easy to transport from room to room, saving a lot of trips back and forth. Holds lots of sketchpads, lots of compartments to separate items. If I want to go plein air sketching, it's all there ready to go. I love it, and would recommend to any artist or student!
Best travel pack ever
from San Antonio, TX
I purchased this bag to hold the Judson Art Outfitters Laptop Journaling Easel, which is a wooden box with a drawer in it. The bag is perfect. It hold the easel, my large hardbound journal, my travel palette, and paper. It has several places that hold burshes, pens, pencils, ID card, money, etc. And it has a space that would also double as a laptop computer holder. Apparently it was designed by artists for themselves, and they really did think of everything. I highly recommend this bag.
Better option over plastic bins
By City painter
from Washington, DC
Before, I used to lug around a large plastic bin on the subway and this bag is a much more comfortable option. Presently, I use it to hold four 8 oz. jars of paint and medium, three 5 oz. tubes, 16 two oz. tubes, 20 brushes (12 large), sketchbook 9X12, 12X16 canvas paper pad, staywet palette 13X12, 5 painting knives, full size scissors, at least 5 writings utensils, two rags, roll of tape and 2.5 oz brush cleaner. Could fit a bit more but that's what goes in for now. It's easier to carry on public transportation and better organized to find paints than a large plastic art bin (which I find really useful in my home studio but the one handle makes it tough for the subway). The shoulder strap is comfortable and frees up your arm and hand. Just enough compartments to be useful but not so many that I forget where I put things. Great buy.
