good easel with a couple problems
Comments about Mabef Field Painting Easel M-27:
This is a really good solid easel with a simple design. I like that it is all-in-one, both tripod and canvas holder, not separate pieces, like with a pochade box. It adjusts to any height I want. I fashioned a shelf that I put on the brackets, and I tighten down with the two clamps. This works really well, and I'm almost as comfortable using it as I am in my studio. It does have a couple issues though. First is the big wooden piece at the top that casts a huge shadow over my panel/canvas. This is so annoying that I plan to saw it off! The other thing is the bottom canvas holder is way too narrow, which results in a lot of wiggle. It should be two inches wider, and it would not get in the way when easel is collapsed. This is a big drawback. Hard to believe they field tested this easel with these obvious problems. I enjoy using it,but it definitely needs a wider canvas holder to keep the panel/canvas more secure. So its a good easel, but far from perfect. It was a great deal when I bought mine, but it was alot cheaper then.

Mabef quality control issues
from NE Georgia
If you order this, check it thoroughly! It's not the model that's at fault; it's Mabef quality control. I found it impossible to adjust this easel to hold the work tightly. The mast and canvas holders are out of alignment and everything feels sloppy. I assumed it was my inexperience and that using a field easel has a steep learning curve. I saw this same model in another store, though, and it adjusts perfectly, with ease. So I wish I'd tried to exchange this before it was too late. Don't assume that it's just hard to use!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Solid with only a minor drawback
By woodlands typography
from hugging the WY border in CO
Having worked to long on table surfaces, I broke down and bought an easel for use with oils (both pastels and paint). This small and light wonder holds steady, is crafted beautifully, and offers the bonus of a place to hold a pastel box or palette. I bought Mabef on reputation alone and was not disappointed. Blick, as always having a superb price, made this possible. The only drawback I have found is if you keep the main structure of the canvas holder low and tilted, it makes the use of the box/palette supports difficult--it tilts into the plane, causing you to lower the supports to a level that is inconvenient. This is by no means a big deal and finding ways around it is not overly difficult.

Convenient field easal
By Kim the art journey
from Centennial, CO
This is one of the rare easels designed to also hold a pastel box. Very convenient and stores well. I wish it had a shoulder strap for carrying, though. Also, this easel weighs about 5 pounds, not 23 as stated. Who would carry a 23 pound easel all around? Maybe that was shipping weight.
Merchant response: At Blick we always attempt to provide the best information possible to our customers. However, these types of issues do arise occasionally and we apologize for this. We have updated this page to reflect that the Mabef M-27 weighs 4 lbs or 1.9 kg. If you ever have an issue with your order, please contact our Customer Service department via email or by calling (800) 723-2787 and we will do our best to rectify the situation.
