LeFranc Raw Umber

LeFranc Raw Umber is one of my favorite paints and is a must-have on my palette. It contains some synthetic and natural yellow ocher which gives it a little more opacity than raw umbers made from PBr7 alone - this makes it perfect for blocking-in and gestural sketches. Adding white results in a neutral with a slightly greenish cast. Good tinting strength.Comparable to Rublev French Raw Umber but is less gritty.

Great pigment quality and selection for the money

They do not list the binder on the tube and I can't find mention of it on their site. I have heard they use soy oil and that would explain the super low prices. This company used some good quality pigment and an unusually good selection, (especially in the yellows ) for instance Bismuth and Benzi yellow. It dries very slow like safflower paint and the tubes seem to get used up pretty fast. If you want a good selection of modern pigments ( non or less toxic compared to cadmiums) and want an inexpensive paint for sketching or something I could recommend trying these. Especially because some of these pigments are hard to find and usually expensive,

I love the larger than usual tube openings and caps. My only reservation is that there may be a bit too much oil in the mix. But there Raw Umber is a lovely warm umber so I can live with the oiliness.

Love, Love, Love L&B
I've been painting professionally for many years. For much of that time, I used Rembrandt oil paint which I loved. When Rembrandt prices soared out of reach, I tried L&B and now use it almost exclusively. The L&B colors are beautiful, bright and true -- great for impressionist work. The paint comes out of the tube in tact (no oily separation,) has a very amiable consistency and mixes well (including with other brands.) From my experience, it is also light-fast (haven't experienced any fading or dullness over time.) It is very similar to Rembrandt but is far more affordable. I love it and highly recommend it.

This product was recommended to me by another painter. I had been using a titanium white for years. I found the viscosity very much different in this product. It's much thicker, heavier, shows brushstrokes more. It seems a warmer white that the titanium alone and I understand that with the addition of Zinc it helps the paint layers dry from the inside out---rather than the surface drying first which opens the door to surface cracking. If you paint thinly a medium might be required from time to time.I would recommend this to the serious painter.

I do mainly traditional , Tonalist inspired Landscapes and some Still Lifes. I am also recently retired and don't have a fortune to spend on supplies. These professional quality paints are a good, solid value. (Plus I can't help liking that they are French and the company has been producing them for hundreds of years.)
