For watercolor? Really? Um, no way.

Comments about Holbein Multimedia Books:
I'm really confused by the reviews that said this sketchbook is good for watercolor. Those reviews are why I purchased it, but I recently took it on a trip to D.C. and it was an utter failure with watercolor. It did okay with fountain pens and graphite (though the texture is a bit weird) but watercolor? Washes and lifts were nearly impossible on this paper. (I couldn't even lift enough pigment to make clouds.) Brushstrokes left hard lines, and pigment pooled into mud and cauliflowered. Colors faded drastically as they dried. Though I loved the streamlined size and the old-school looks of this sketchbook, I'm tearing out my travel sketches and tossing the sketchbook into the donate bin.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

High quality versatile drawing book
These drawing books are excellent for multi media; watercolor, graphite, colored pencil and ink. Each page has a rough and smooth side for tooth variations. Perfect for travel. Not bulky. They are a step up from a usual sketchbook because the paper quality and overall make is beautiful. They are expensive, but worth it. I have them in several sizes, and the smallest are easy to slip into a small tote.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great for life drawing
Not cheap but it's a wonderful paper and I love the way it withstands the abuse of water-soluble media and speedy life drawing sessions. I also like how it's all contained in a sturdy notebook. Wish there was also a size between the 14x11 and the 21x15.

Best for travel journals

I keep an illustrated journal when I travel and these books are the only thing I use. The paper doesn't bleed and can be used for water colors.

This book will forever be my favorite
from Charlotte, NC
I was looking for something small and easy to carry around to use my Copics on. I saw this and read some of the reviews and just thought it would work. And i was right I love this book the paper is what i am looking for in order to practice using my Copics its not too smooth and has the right amount of texture I need. I got the small size so I can have it on the go once I am done with It I will probably get another. They are just perfect plus the add bonus of the ribbon to tie it is helpful because I always put loose paper and the ribbon helps keep them in.

I have been using the Holbein Multi Media for years. I use them for my mixed media art. They take watercolor better than most. I really like the ribbon ties that can close up the book and protect the pages from being destroyed. I just wish Dick Blick would carry the 8"x8" size also.
This is idea for travel and passed this on to students.

Very good paper for a sketchbook!
By Naturalist up the road

I carry a sketchbook with me every day and use it for pencil, pen and watercolor drawings, often of plants. As I started carrying the watercolors around more, I got more and more frustrated with how poorly they worked on other sketchbook papers. This paper is quite good for pencil drawings with a watercolor wash. I am buying more for a trip abroad. I don't much like the little ribbons, though--they tend to ravel and are too short for a bow. I may sew extensions on them, or get a big rubber band.

Exactly what we had been searching for
By Koi Girl

My daughter has been searching for a journal/sketch book with paper that could also handle paint. Apparently, they are few and far between, but this one is exactly what she has been looking for.
