Welcome to dickblick
Ancient oriental watercolors are characterized by their delicate hues. Now today's artist can journey back into time to create with the same timeless palette used by Japanese and Chinese artists 15 centuries ago.
Delicate and harmonious, the 48 Irodori colors are created using pure pigment in gum arabic for clean, crisp results that won't darken or muddy. Highly saturated, they granulate very freely, and are more opaque in the true Asian fashion. Available in 15 ml (0.5 oz) tubes.
For a complete listing of the colors in each set please refer to the Item Specs tab on this page, or click the magnifying glass icon next to the set name in the table below.
Gift Idea — Irodori colors are a treasured gift that will enhance the color selection of any watercolorist.

Because of their high saturation, Irodori colors do not adhere well to a palette. Holbein recommends that you squeeze out only what is needed at one time, and leave the balance in the tube.

Holbein Irodori Antique Artist Watercolor is Exceptional
Comments about Holbein Irodori Antique Artist Watercolors:
Irodori Antique Watercolors duplicate Japanese textile colors. I use Holbein Gouache and recently bought Irodori Watercolors to add to my palette. They remain clear and bright even when mixed. No other brands of professional paint mix Asian colors as well as the Irodori.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

i bought this in antique coral and antique gold. the coral was absolutely beautiful. the gold was also so beautiful, however it was a little too transparent for my liking, but beautiful for subtle touches.

a few colors are really excellent...
from New Jersey
Have to agree with the last review, some colors are better than others. Love the Opal Green, Tyrian Purple, Antique Rose, had no use for the Coral Red, Antique Brown-Grey, or the Pale Blue - these last three just did not offer anything unique as far as their colors went. BUT I would absolutely recommend having at least a few of these in your paint arsenal, unique enough texture and color to make it worth while. Thank you.

Good but only for certain colors
I really the enjoy the Irodori paints I bought. Some of them are more opaque than regular watercolors, but can be mixed with them for different effects and an expanded palette. The black actually works very well mixed with the other colors (which is usually done with sumi ink in Chinese painting) Other colors are very bright and transparent. My favorite colors were the Antique Violet Blue, Antique Pompadour, and Antique Black. The main problem I have with these paints is that Holbien does not use very lightfast pigments in their reds. I research pigment ingredients every time I buy new colors, so consequently I didn't buy of their reds and oranges. I would like to, since they are beautiful paints, but I cannot give my customers a painting where one color will fade.

Super Bright Watercolors
By Mr. Maki
Comments about Holbein Irodori Antique Artist Watercolor Sets:
This is the best watercolor paint I have used. It's super bright and highly pigmented --- can be worked tight or lose.I have had a set of 36 for two years and have used very little paint b/c a little goes a long way.

from Berkeley, CA
I bought these paints as a gift for my sister. I chose 3 beautiful colors which were new to her palette. She is using them now and is very pleased with the results. [...]

About Me Artist, Student
This stuff is STRONG compared to other paints I've tried, a little goes a long way. This is a very dry and heavy pigmented paint, it is more opaque than most watercolors and it granulates beautifully with wet on wet techniques. Most of the colors don't stain the paper very much and it's fairly easy to make adjustments to your paintings. This is by far my favorite watercolor paint.
