Welcome to dickblick
Developed by Holbein to offer the same high pigment quality and archival characteristics of Holbein's Artists' Oil line while allowing soap-and-water cleanup, Duo Aqua Oils are characterized by rich hues, high chroma, excellent resistance to light, and 17 "Elite" colors that contain heavy metal pigments such as quinacridones, cadmiums and cobalts.
Holbein Duo Aqua Oil Colors can be diluted with water, which creates a "melting" effect. A unique surface active agent helps them dry faster than traditional oils, allowing work to be completed in a shorter period of time.
Holbein Duo Aqua Oils can be mixed with acrylics, watercolors, gouache, and oils, to create a variety of effects and make possible a variety of techniques. They can even be mixed with metallic and pearlescent watercolors to create colors that do not normally exist in oil color palettes. Duo Aqua Oil Colors are no longer watersoluble when mixed with more than 30% traditional oil color.
Because they clean up with soap and water instead of harsh solvents, Duo Aqua Oil Colors are safer than traditional oils for use in the studio or classroom.
Note — Holbein's five "Luminous" colors should not be considered permanent. They will degrade with exposure to ultraviolet light. The lifespan of such works can be expanded greatly if they are shielded from ultraviolet light.

Comments about Holbein Duo Aqua Water Soluble Oils:
Aqua oils are a perfect medium to work with because of the easy of clean up, the buttery feels of the paint as it goes on, and the fact that you can use acrylicsa right along with them.

I have never used water soluble oils before and am getting used to them. Some of the colors in the set are more pigment-dense than others and some dry faster than others. Over all, they handle much like traditional oil paint but do dry faster - not as fast as acrylics, though

These are fairly nice overall, but need some re-designing of handling characteristics: First, if the paint sits on the palette overnight it has a tendency to gum up and become unusable. If it's a thick pile of paint the outside areas will gum up first. If the paint had any water in it, like thinner areas on the palette they will be dry and unusable. So you can't put much paint on the palette and let it sit like regular oils, it gets wasted. Second, I work watery in the beginning, then go thicker, which is normal and correct for longevity. However, if you do thinner glazes with the Duo plus water on top of thicker paint (which in my case has been drying for at least a couple weeks) the glaze will stain the drier layer underneath, won't come out, and looks muddy (like dark splotches on lighter areas). Maybe their mediums will correct this, I haven't tried them yet, But regular oils don't do that.Third: Using these without water is alright, but kind of stiff and have a pasty drag to me. If you use a fair amount of water they dry very dull and matte. Holbein manipulates their Duo oil paints differently than other manufacturers, with an additive that behaves like a surfactant, maybe that's why the Duo paints behave as stated above.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your candid assessment. Water-miscible oils do use surfactants to induce miscibilty with water. You've discovered correctly that mixing water with water-miscible oils will make them dry dull and matte, and it can also cause them to color-shift from wet to dry in a way that traditional oils do not. I use this product straight out of the tube. No mixing of colors. So the color range is amazing and allows be to do this. It has a very creamy texture lays down wet on wet beautifully. You can completely cover your last stroke with a nice thick stroke. A few of the colors are pretty transparent. The Luminous pink is one. But aside from that, these are the best I have worked with!

I'm recently getting back to painting after many years. Lo and behold, water soluble oils! I read several reviews discussing them and took the plunge. The Holbein paint was lovely, creamy, rich enough to eat, but I painted with it instead. I love that oil smell, but without the need for turps. Washes up with water and soap just as well. I'm a convert!

Clean up is a breeze!
from Pierce, Co
I used this product with a finger painting technique and it was a pleasure. The paint was smooth and the color clear and vibrant. No soap or stinky solvents used when it came to clean up. Water was all that was needed.I would definitely recommend this oil paint for beginners as well as advanced artists.
