Welcome to dickblick
Holbein has developed an exceptional range of artist-quality soft pastels that offer great covering and blending power because of their soft powder richness.
From inception to final production, Holbein's unique manufacturing process is computerized and mechanized. Every stick is scanned individually to guarantee even distribution of pigment and pigment purity, ensuring a predictably constant hue for use in sketching, undercoating, and finished work.
Individually wrapped sticks feature a square shape for versatility — use the flat sides or sharp edges! A smaller size (2" L × 5/16" Sqr) makes them easy to hold and less prone to breakage.
A pastel fixative is recommended to prevent colors from fading.

Good for Outdoor Color Sketches!
By Tree Painter
from Eagle Point, Oregon
I watched a video by an artist who had Holbein make an assortment of soft pastels for her. I purchased the set from Blick and have found them to be useful for outdoor sketches. The combination of colors is good. My one concern and why I only use Holbein pastels for sketches is they need a fixative to prevent fading. (I saw that on the Blick website.) I do not use fixatives on soft pastel paintings because it can dull and darken my work. However, as a tool for sketches, Holbein makes a good product and it would be good for those who use a fixative.

This pastel is a hard pastel. I love the shape. It has crisp sharp edges that are good for detail. The are wonderful for shading and using a light touch. The color variety is vast. I had a hard time choosing !

Holbein Artist Oil Pastels
I have used these particular Holbein oil pastels for over 28 years and have found these to be the truest in color, ease and powerful tools of artwork. I have sold many paper pieces using these pastels, and of the ones that I have that are at least 25 years old, the colors remain true. The colors are like pure sticks of color, and you can use them in a variety of ways. I tend to keep working over and over building up layers and the sticks start to blend and the colors are as true as using oil paint itself. I only use these after trying many others.
