Endorsed by the Oil Pastel Association of America (OPA), Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels come in a superb range of 225 colors that feel and move like a chalk pastel.

These pastels are the culmination of more than 50 years of research, development, and manufacturing expertise in the oil pastel field. The manufacturing process is entirely automated to ensure uniformity of color distribution. They handle evenly and cleanly without stickiness and, once down, provide excellent surface stability. Because of the wax content and highly refined mineral oil used in their manufacture, they will never harden completely.

It is recommended that the surface not be fixed, as this will detract from the vibrancy of the pigments. They can be applied to almost any ground, and used over acrylic and oil color. Unlike oil pastels that use vegetable oils, Holbein Artist Oil Pastels are inert once down and will not dry out or crack. Finished works of art are usually mounted under glass.

Each oil pastel measures 3/8" square × 2-3/4" long.

Holbein Artists' Oil Pastels are manufactured to the Munsell color standard for hue, value, and chroma.

Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

I have only had time to try these pastels out so I am rating on my experience. These oil pastels are saturated with pigment. They work nicely over many surfaces and blend well. The only reason I did not give them 5* is that I have not used enough different brands to compare but I most likely will stick with Holbein because of the value for the price. I am not sure I like the square sized feature and think I would prefer it be round, like some others, but will give it time.

As an artist/instructor, I only use two kinds of oil pastel and I also recommend only two brands to my adult students who are learning to paint exclusively in oil pastel. Holbein, is by far the best of all oil pastels because of its creamy dense consistency that offers the best coverage and lasts the longest. Sennelier is the second best but,it is sheer and more oily and does not go as far. Please consider carrying Holbein professional oil pastels again in your Chicagoland stores. My students are frustrated that they cannot see the oil pastel before they take the class and ordering on line takes entirely too much time. They need access to Holbein in your stores. I am one of the founders of a growing oil pastel art league called The Yellow House Artists and also am a professional member of The Oil Pastel Society. Oil Pastel is my medium of choice because of its immediacy, direct application, and non-toxic attributes. Since it never dries, I can return to work on the painting at any time and can make changes that will integrate into the previous marks of oil pastel. All other types of oil pastel are waxy and do not have the coverage that Holein provides. I am able to work from very dark to light with assurance that the light Holbein oil pastels will lay on top and be beautifully vivid and intense. Our growing group of oil pastel enthusiasts need Holbein and only want to work with the two brands....nothing else will work. We cringe at the price, but will not settle for any other kind of oil pastel. It would be great to have your stores have Holbein in stock by the stick. You have scaled down your total pastel selection in your stores and it is dissappointing.
