Endorsed by the Oil Pastel Association of America (OPA), Holbein Artists’ Oil Pastels come in a superb range of 225 colors that feel and move like a chalk pastel.
These pastels are the culmination of more than 50 years of research, development, and manufacturing expertise in the oil pastel field. The manufacturing process is entirely automated to ensure uniformity of color distribution. They handle evenly and cleanly without stickiness and, once down, provide excellent surface stability. Because of the wax content and highly refined mineral oil used in their manufacture, they will never harden completely.
It is recommended that the surface not be fixed, as this will detract from the vibrancy of the pigments. They can be applied to almost any ground, and used over acrylic and oil color. Unlike oil pastels that use vegetable oils, Holbein Artist Oil Pastels are inert once down and will not dry out or crack. Finished works of art are usually mounted under glass.
Each oil pastel measures 3/8" square × 2-3/4" long.
Holbein Artists' Oil Pastels are manufactured to the Munsell color standard for hue, value, and chroma.

Holbein Artists' Oil Pastels are great
I have been using these pastels to assist various oil paintings I have done. I am finding their color rich and reliable. I have had some for a very long time and their quality has not diminished at all. I notice that one suggestion by Dick Blick for this review is that I discuss what isn't so great about this product. I have absolutely NO complaints. Perhaps if I have any concern, it would be that these fine materials would be discontinued since I cannot find a variety of sets offered.
I wrote a review in 2014 and I am surprised to see that I haven't changed my mind a tiny bit: I love Holbein and particularly its muted colors & blues. Beware though: adding white to the hue gives it a chalky finish whereas the need to buy the shades instead. Why would someone want to kill those luxurious colors? BTW Being harder than say, Sennelier, Holbein are very appropriate for detail work or as a first coat prior to softer pastels.
Product great, packaging and shipping not so much
from Bellevue, IA
The Holbein pastels are great -- I ordered the four colors I needed to finish a project, they arrived as ordered and on time. My problem was with the shipping/packaging method -- the pastels were each in a protective plastic casing and could have easily been mailed in a small padded envelope. Instead they came in an oversized carton with two shoe boxes worth of plastic packing pillows, not to mention costing almost nine dollars (about the price of the pastels) to ship. Seemed expensive and wasteful and with a little forethought, a better, more environmentally friendly method should be possible.
Holbein oil pastels have beautiful colors and full of rich pigment. Love them!

I have almost every brand of oil pastel.Holbein became my most favorite oil pastel. It's amazingly soft and the color spectrum is just what I needed. I will definitely buy them again. It would be even nicer if it is wrapped with color's name.
Great but Pricey
from New York City
The "per item" price for these is reasonable, given that they are perhaps the best of their kind. However, by the time you get done with shipping & handling, the effective per item price gets way up there. I needed a few specific colors, so it was worth it. You can buy single Sennelier oil pastels in the Blick stores, but not Holbein Artist's oil pastels; Sennelier are gooier and mine misbehaved. A friend who uses oil pastels a lot said she thought the Senneliers were "spoiled" as it seems can sometimes happen.
Best in Show.

Sure they break, but I haven't met a pastel yet that doesn't, and it doesn't affect what I do anyway. The pigments are outstanding, they spread and offer superior coverage. The Holbeins aren't like a typical oil pastel though, they are kind of in a class of their own.Best of all? They don't melt in your fingers like others.

This year I have been doing a number of oil pastels as reference for larger oil paintings. I enjoy them so much that I have already given 2 worksops on their flexibility.

I am a professional oil pastel artist and I use Holbein and Sennelier oil pastels. Each type of pastel has a different quality to them. Holbein oil pastels are drier and harder but have a great pigment load. I use them to build up layers by skimming them across the surface of my work.. Sennelier oil pastels are very creamy and much softer and can be applied over the top of Holbein. I will not waste my time with any other brand of oil pastel other than the two mentioned here.
