Welcome to dickblick
Holbein's opaque matte gouache is Japan's foremost designers' color medium. These paints deliver a brilliant, rich matte finish using naturally opaque pigments — no opaquing agents are added. This creates vibrant, exciting color that won't muddy when mixed.
Truly professional grade, this gouache does not darken, bleed, or crack. Use it in dense opaque layers to build surface body, or thin it with water to semi-transparency. Available in a wide range of colors in 15 ml tubes.
Gift Idea — Sets of Holbein Gouache are a great way to sample a selection of these vibrant colors. See Holbein Artists' Gouache Sets for pictures and more detailed specifications of these sets.
Color Chart Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

Beam Me Up Some Gouache
By Mary Does Art
from Manistee, MI
Comments about Holbein Artists' Gouache:
The Holbein gouache is a vibrant, opaque water based pigment. I use is in mono printing and absolutely rely on its integrity. I have used other gouache and have been disappointed in the color value and their resilience as I draw into the print. The product is fantastic and Dick Blick's speedy shipping is like having art supplies beamed up!!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Obion artist gouache water colors
from Anchorage, Alaska
I have gone from oils to watercolor so to using Holbeins gouache water colors. The colors are fantastic, dries quickly and easy to paint with. I am sold on this paint!!!
from Lynchburg VA
I use these in mixed media work. They are very good paints, but I prefer M Graham most of the time. Holbein has colors that I can't get with M Graham and they are vivid and finely milled. I think the price is a bit high

I bought this for my art class
By The College Student
from Kennesaw, GA
Comments about Holbein Artists' Gouache Sets:
So I had to get these for my art class in the beginning of the semester. Did not do that. I bought similar, cheaper paints from some other brand and they were TERRIBLE. Ruined my painting. So I decided to follow the rules and get the right brand. Unfortunately once they arrived we no longer needed these paints for my class, and I haven't had a chance to paint something big with them. So I can't say personally that they're good, but seeing how everyone else in the class that used these paints had a nice even paint application with vibrant colors, they probably are. If you need CMYK paints, these are a good choice.

not my choice
from Oneonta, New York
Pigment seems thin; not your velvety rich pigmented gouache from the best by Windsor and Newton Designers Gouache. I bought this due to good reviews and I'm disappointed. I like a good hiding power with my paints and this is more like a heavy watercolor that you need to add white pigment to all colors if you want any power to perform.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for your candid assessment. It's surprising to hear the pigment in these colors described as thin, and makes us wonder if there may have been some separation in the set you received. We'd love to talk to you about this to determine how we can help. Please call us at 1-800-933-2542 (weekdays 8am-5:30pm CST) or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

I love these paints

I love painting with goauche and these paints were lovely colors, dense, smooth, easy to use with as little or as much water as I chose. And they covered mistakes well. Very beautiful.

Another Way to Watercolor
from Wichita, Kansas
Wanted to try gouache since I've been using watercolor for years. Ordered a set of 18 colors - they are small 5ml tubes but I am not painting murals so this is not a problem for me. The price was right for testing the materials. Colors are concentrated! You can water down for more of a wash if you like. The best part is colors do not bleed and bloom into each other unless you intentionally wet the paper. The drying time is very short so you can get nice edges. If you don't want edges you can pre-wet your paper or blend with a clean wet brush. Really like this set. Good value and fun to work with.

A reat product, more matt and even than any other gouache used - thirty years plus painting. Also, reconsituting is great, making this product a great value. I've enjoyed the color, having bought a set of cyan, magena, yellow, black and white. Perfect for my palette.
Perfect quality paint
from Peoria, Il
Holbein is more opaque and evenly matte than other gouache brands I have used. It is extremely smooth and blends and mixes well with other colors. I also enjoy how easy it is to reconstitute with water for another use avoiding waste of material. It is the only brand I will buy!
