Welcome to dickblick
Attractive and functional, a hand-bound, sketch journal covered in book cloth is the perfect travel companion for artists.
Each journal features 128 buff colored blank pages, a durable elastic closure, and a useful clear plastic envelope to hold notes or business cards.
The heavyweight sheets are 130 gsm (normal drawing paper is 80 gsm) and acid free. They have a light, toothy surface that accepts pen-and-ink, pencil, markers, and light watercolor washes without buckling.

I am mostly going to compare these books to Moleskine sketchbooks, which are what I usually use for my art journaling.First, I don't like the translucent sharp-edged plastic envelope/sleeve in the back of the book. If I could remove it without wrecking the book I would. The pages have more tooth than I thought they would. I prefer the smoothness of the Moleskine paper because I mostly use pastel pencils and a little mixed media for my art journaling more so than markers, watercolor, gauche or acrylic. The paper is a little more yellow or slightly darker than the Moleskine paper, although Moleskine books do not have a very white or bright paper either. I love the various colors these journals come in as opposed to the red or black only Moleskine sketchbook journals. I'm pretty sure the varied colors of the covers are what attracted me to them. The fabric used on the covers of these Global Art books is rather pretty and nice feeling, but I'm not sure if I could remove a stain or glue blob from them as easily as I can wipe clean the Moleskine journals since I haven't put these books to use yet.Perhaps these journals will inspire me to use more mixed media for art journaling because the pages are a different type of paper. The paper seems to have about the same weight or thinness as the Moleskine sketchbooks. So to test this paper, I'll probably remove a whole leaf from the middle of the book, which should be easy enough to do with an exacto knife since the signatures are sewn, which is good and the mark of quality. Then I'll glue them together to see how well that works, then gesso over it, and then try different types of paint (except watercolor because I don't like watercolor over gesso). All in all, they are well-made books and will sit on the shelf nicely with my Moleskine journals, since both are just about the same size, with these being 1/8" wider than the Moleskine journals, but both are the same height.Lastly, I purchased these books in several different colors and sizes. They were not a gift.
LOVE THESE BOOKS>

I use these books for my art journaling. they take pen, ink, watercolor and even acrylic paints. I stuff them full with words, sketches and then add photos, post cards and other stuff. The 8X5 fits in my purse and travels well, the elastic band keeps the book closed even being stuffed with to the gills. the fabric cover is tough and holds up well. Love it.
3x5 sketch book
from Santa clara ca
I like to sketch landscapes but I have a husband who gets restless after 10 minutes waiting for me to finish. A double page in this 3x5 inch plus a 0.1 micron mean I can get down the essentials in a satisfactory time. Added benefit is that the notebook fits perfectly in my purse.

I like the size. Easy to take along. The paper is good quality.

Versatile Great Sketchbook
By Angeline Marie

I've used these Global Handbooks for a few years. The binding of these books is amazing. No matter how I stuff the books, the paper stays well bound. The strap to keep the book closed is of great quality, too as I have yet to stretch one out beyond it's limit. My only complaint is the back pocket on the inside of the back cover: please give a way to close? My papers fall out all the time! The paper is not a true "mixed media" type of paper - but it holds up wonderfully to watercolor, ink, pencil, paint, and markers. Some of these will bleed through depending how much is used - but as I glue things into the book, too, this is not of great concern to me. I have yet to find a book this versatile with this type of binding. I highly recommend this book for all kinds of use.

great size for traveling
from Tucson, Az
I use these compact journals to record sketches of the fabulous scenes in front of me when I travel. The size is perfect for drawing on my lap or tabletop, in the plane, and in restaurants. I love the quality of the paper for pens and colored pencils.I love the usefulness of the rubberband to hold everything together and also the envelope in the back to hold postcards and photos.
Handbook is a great value. Nice journal.

This journal has ample pages and accepts dry brush watercolor well. We use these for nature study. It's a good size for portability.

Using for now but not planning to purchase again
from Outer Banks
I've been watercolor sketching in this book for about 2 weeks now. I will continue to use it, but I don't plan to buy this sketchbook again. I think the easiest way to review it is to list my top three personal pros and cons. Hope this helps you with your decision!Pros:- Nice curb appeal: Cover is a feel-good, durable fabric; binding is nicely stitched; elastic band is a fantastic bonus.- Even though not remotely a watercolor paper, the pages take light wash with only a bit of curling and even allow for a slight amount of scrubbing.- Accepts pen well. Micron writes nicely on it, and fountain pen seems to do okay.Cons:- "Heavyweight" description for paper is an exaggeration - it's way too easy to accidentally wrinkle or fold the pages.- This paper mars even with a soft lead and likes to hold onto graphite. I had a tough time erasing my sketching lines, and I sketch with a pencil lightly.- IMO, I paid for the curb appeal. For this price, I expect the paper to perform a bit better for my uses.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Handbook Artist Journal - 3.5 x 5.5 inches
from Beverly Hills CA
At 180 gsm this sketchbook is a multi-media power house!! You can sketch and even use guache, acrylics and ink in it! It even has a handy pocket that-- great for business cards and loose doodles and what not. I love the band that ties the sketchbook when it's closed-- keeps it neat and flat! Great size at about 5.5 X8.5 inches. For the past 26 sketchbooks I've been using a spiral bound sketchbook so the hard-bound situation is going to take some getting used to.
