Welcome to dickblick
Attractive and functional, a hand-bound, sketch journal covered in book cloth is the perfect travel companion for artists.
Each journal features 128 buff colored blank pages, a durable elastic closure, and a useful clear plastic envelope to hold notes or business cards.
The heavyweight sheets are 130 gsm (normal drawing paper is 80 gsm) and acid free. They have a light, toothy surface that accepts pen-and-ink, pencil, markers, and light watercolor washes without buckling.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE MY Handbook Artist's Journal
By Dianna Derhak
from Tri-Main Center, Buffalo, NY
Comments about Global Art Hand Book Artist Journals:
I wanted to sketch more but I didn't want to carry around a heavy sketchbook. The Handbook Pocket Landscape 3.5 x 5.5 fits into my purse without being bulky. It's beautiful. I chose the Vermillion Red. It inspires me. It feels sturdy in my hands. The paper is high quality heavyweight acid-free paper with enough tooth to take watercolor washes. Yes, I love it.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love this sketchbook!
from Dallas, TX
I love the size of this sketchbook, and the paper seems to hold up well to all of my ink pens and markers so far!
Great product and great price

I use these "hand-book Journals" from Global Materials, as they are perfect for light to heavy watercolor washes as well as an excellent surface for pen and graphite sketching. I travel with them and use them for everyday sketching and idea trials. The cost through Blick is substantially better than alternative sources.AND they are American made.

I am very pleased with this journal and will continue to purchase these. I will also recommend them to my students.

This little journal is easy to carry along anywhere....it takes pencil, pen and watercolor washes well..even acrylic. Also, bought as gifts for friends to encourage journaling with art...Glad someone I knew had one they loved and showed to me.
Great size book to carry with you
By work in progress
Great for wet or dry application....pen, pencil and watercolor.
I wondered if the normal paper would hold up well with gouache even though I'd read that it was fine. It does with barely a wrinkle even though I sometimes use quite a lot of water. I purchased the square format and am finding it excellent for both carrying and usefulness.
These Are Amazing!

I am mostly going to compare these books to Moleskine sketchbooks, which are what I usually use for my art journaling.First, I don't like the translucent sharp-edged plastic envelope/sleeve in the back of the book. If I could remove it without wrecking the book I would. The pages have more tooth than I thought they would. I prefer the smoothness of the Moleskine paper because I mostly use pastel pencils and a little mixed media for my art journaling more so than markers, watercolor, gauche or acrylic. The paper is a little more yellow or slightly darker than the Moleskine paper, although Moleskine books do not have a very white or bright paper either. I love the various colors these journals come in as opposed to the red or black only Moleskine sketchbook journals. I'm pretty sure the varied colors of the covers are what attracted me to them. The fabric used on the covers of these Global Art books is rather pretty and nice feeling, but I'm not sure if I could remove a stain or glue blob from them as easily as I can wipe clean the Moleskine journals since I haven't put these books to use yet.Perhaps these journals will inspire me to use more mixed media for art journaling because the pages are a different type of paper. The paper seems to have about the same weight or thinness as the Moleskine sketchbooks. So to test this paper, I'll probably remove a whole leaf from the middle of the book, which should be easy enough to do with an exacto knife since the signatures are sewn, which is good and the mark of quality. Then I'll glue them together to see how well that works, then gesso over it, and then try different types of paint (except watercolor because I don't like watercolor over gesso). All in all, they are well-made books and will sit on the shelf nicely with my Moleskine journals, since both are just about the same size, with these being 1/8" wider than the Moleskine journals, but both are the same height.Lastly, I purchased these books in several different colors and sizes. They were not a gift.
LOVE THESE BOOKS>

I use these books for my art journaling. they take pen, ink, watercolor and even acrylic paints. I stuff them full with words, sketches and then add photos, post cards and other stuff. The 8X5 fits in my purse and travels well, the elastic band keeps the book closed even being stuffed with to the gills. the fabric cover is tough and holds up well. Love it.
