Welcome to dickblick
Students and adults alike can enjoy making impressions from these extremely life-like rubber fish replicas. Originating in 19th century Japan, gyotaku (meaning "print fish") developed from the need to record the exact size of a trophy catch and evolved into a beautiful art form in its own right.
The process is simple. Apply tempera or block printing ink directly to the fish with foam brayers or soft brushes, then place printmaking paper over the fish and rub! The monoprint results will be different each time.
Make prints for hanging, wrapping paper, banners, even T-shirts (use water-base screen printing inks that can be heat set). In the classroom Gyotaku can be used to stimulate discussions about species of fish, Japanese culture, and nature printing in general.
Cast from real fish, these rubber replicas are life size, ranging from 4" (Sea Horse) to 11-3/4" long (Trout) and are flat on one side.

Walleye is tiny
Comments about Gyotaku Fish Printing Replicas:
The other fish are fine, I have several individual fish and one set. Their sizes are good. I ordered 3 walleeye because it is MN's state fish. The replicas are TINY.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for your review. Although the walleye is 8 ¼” as stated on our web page, we understand that this would seem small if you're comparing it to the real thing! If you feel this product won't meet your needs, just give us a call at 1-800-723-2782, and we'll be happy to work with you on a return or exchange.

The quality and prints are great, I just wish the price was a little lower so that we could have more in the classroom.

I have a large collection of Gyotaku fish and was excited to add the Angelfish to my students' choices. When it arrived, I was disappointed to see it did not live up to the level of quality in the other products. It is thick, chunky, and lacks detail. It has a edge all the way around that prints, making the fish appear flat and unrealistic. I love my carp, flounder, and even the piranha, but this one was a big disappointment.
Merchant response: We are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the quality of the Angelfish. Our Customer Care team will be in touch to see if we can help you with a return or exchange. You can always reach us at 1.800.723.2787 any time that you are not completely satisfied with a product, or have any questions.

Gyotaku Fish Orinting replicas

This is a perfect product for teacing multi-age children about the art and history of Japan. Few other materials are needed. I will use this for a special school event of six classes of about 25 students each. The children in each class will be placed into groups of four to make their prints while the rest of the children work on their backgrounds. The only other materials needed are old crayons, newsprint, black (or other color) tempera, and four brushes to apply the paint. This is a very economical product for a teacher who has to purchase her own materials!

I have been eyeballing the rubber fish for Gyutaku printing for some time. I knew that my students would really enjoy them, but I just never specified the funds to buy them. This year, I knew our 6th grade teacher was having a member of the Japanese consulate visit her students after they completed their unit on Japan and its culture so I saw that as a good reason to purchase rubber fish to do a cross-curricular lesson on the purpose and history of printing fish. Long story short, I chose a Trout, which is native to our area of the US. When I first ordered, the rubber mold that arrived had a floppy fin (which upon closer inspection had a tear at the base) and the lip/mouth seemed to be missing a piece. I called customer service and they immediately rectified the issue by sending out a new fish (which was in perfect condition) at no additional charge or inconvenience to me. I successfully used this product with (Blick) screen printing ink that we applied to the fish with brayers before laying tee shirts over the fish. The prints were beautiful and highly detailed - exactly what I had hoped. They washed up easily with mild soap and water. The kids were thrilled with their finished tees and wore them when the representative from the Consulate visited. She was thrilled, too! I recommend Blick materials to anyone who will listen because not only is their Blick brand of high quality and reasonable cost, they absolutely stand behind their products. I have NEVER had a customer service issue with any item purchased that was either damaged or not to my expectations. When you are watching your budget, as many art teachers are, a company like Blick gives you confidence in what you spend.
