This handy collapsible umbrella was designed and manufactured by a plein air painter who has firsthand knowledge of what the painter in the field really needs. Measuring a mere 12" (30 cm) when collapsed, and weighing less than 1 lb (0.5 kg), this is a light, portable painting companion that can be easily stored or carried wherever you need it.

When fully open and extended, the Plein Air Painters' Umbrella measures a full 34" (86 cm) in height with a 42" (107 cm) canopy that provides ample shade for your easel, canvas, and you.

The underside of the umbrella is black in order to reduce glare on palette and canvas. The silver outer side reflects heat and ultraviolet rays, and the wind venting feature allows you to use the umbrella in a slight wind or breeze. A C-clamp, gooseneck, and instructions are included.

I use a standard french easel and there is hardly anywhere that the clamp can attach without bending and it still won't hold for long. The bending portion of the clamp (to adjust the shade)is totally useless, it basically is not flexible at all. The material of the shade is so dark that your eyes can't adjust from your scene back to your palette.
For the plein air painter, forget it. For sleeping in a beach chair, maybe.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Used the umbrella three times. It was really difficult to open all the way and never fully expanded. The third time the flimsy plastic catch broke. My advise - keep looking!

I am afraid I agree with daypainter -- the umbrella tipped my easel over at the first wind (alright, I am willing to admit this could be user error). So maybe I didn't have it right the first time -- but the flimsy plastic catch which held the umbrella canopy open broke on that first tumble! When I tried to contact the manufacturer in Poway, the phone was out of order, and I can't find another number anywhere.

Not happy.

The product was awkward to attach to the easel and time consuming. Because it does not bend you must find an angle hole on the stand f0r the umbrella pole to block the sun. Depending on where you attached the stand to your easel, you may have to find a new attachment point and then find a new hole position for the umbrella. When the sun changes, you have to do it all over again if the holes for the umbrella pole do not let you block the sun. PLUS IF IT IS WINDY BECAUSE IT ATTACHES TO YOUR EASEL, THEY BOTH GO OVER! EVEN IF YOU HAVE WEIGHTED THE EASEL! I would never buy another umbrella that had to attach to an easel, and I would only buy one that had a flexible pole.

Just the right diameter for both of us. Very easy to connect to our easels and adjust according to wind and sun.
It is light and portable, a must for outdoor painting.
Also, the service from Dick Blick was exceptional 6 days order to arrival USA to UK. A site worth remembering.
