Welcome to dickblick
This is a workable fixative and surface preparation for use on paper, acetate, foil, and glass that allows non-porous surfaces to accept waterbased media without beading up. It dries to a non-glossy finish.

Comments about Grumbacher Workable Fixative:
I bought this product from a store and used it on a large drawing. I was shocked to see a very thin powdery layer over the drawing. Almost like a thin layer of dust. I was able to gently wipe this away...but cannot imagine this happening to a charcoal or pastel drawing where wiping over the artwork is out of the question.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We're sorry to hear about the issues you had with this fixative. We do like to advise spraying a test on another surface before spraying a finished work, even if it's a can you've previously used. Please know we're happy to help you with this however we can. If you purchased this at a Blick store, just bring it back to us so we can make it right.

For a first attempt, I rate the use on pastel very poor. The environmental conditions for application are strict and did not influence the results. For some purposes it may find use, but would not prevent smudging, and is non-workable once dried.

Fogs when applied in a heavy coat
By Purple Dave
from Ventura, CA
When using a light layer of Pan Pastels, a coat of this fixative will shift (darken) the color. If the fixative is applied in a heavy coat, it will fog, creating a haze over the workpiece.I found that the SpectraFix brand does NOT cause this color shift for the same condition.
Merchant response: If you ever have specific questions regarding our products or how to use them, you may also contact the Blick Art Materials Product Information Department at email@example.com or by calling (800) 933-2542. Our product specialists will be happy to help you with questions about art materials, product applications, and techniques.

Workable & Finish Fixative, Grumbacker's
from Dexter, MI
I use the workable fixatives for most all types of mediums - pencil mostly but also when working with inked stamped images that will be finished with colored pencils. Sometimes the ink appears dry but smears when adding colored pencils. The workable fixatives make it easier to achieve the look I'm seaking.Don't change a thing!

A lot better than Dull Cote
from Fort Worth
I use Grumbachers for securing weathering chalks on my model railroad builds. It works well and the colors don't fade after applying.
