I have been using Grumbacher pre-tested for 40+ years and my uncle before me. The trick to the caps is to heat the top of the tube with a lighter to loosen the hardened dried paint first. Be patient go slow with the heat or you will melt the cap, then removal is much easier. Put petroleum jelly on the threads and keep them clean and you will not have to use this method much. Cannot remember ever breaking a cap.

I have been looking for a paint to replace my beloved Norma Oils, as they are becoming too expensive for my pocketbook.
It was suggested I try Grumbacher. I never gave these a thought before and always overlooked them. Because it was recommended by one of the nice people at Blicks, I picked up a few tubes to try out.
the paint is excellent.
the colors are strong and luminous. they also have a certain something that the color is not just a red but, also seemed to show something more. Some subtle undertones.
Up against other paints, some of which are quite expensive, these stood out for the color and luminous appearance.
I am someone who likes my paints to be smooth and creamy in feel. One that glides on the canvas. I do not like the paste like or harder feel paint.
This paint is very creamy. And I know that is a turn off for some painters. We all have our preferences.
The look and feel and results I got from these paints makes me determined to replace my other paints and to use Grumbacher's oils from now on.
The price may be cheap but, the results are not.

Grumbacher pre-tested is the best all purpose oil paint there is. The quality of Grumbacher far out weighs the price. I think ever body knows this.

These aren't the VERY BEST paints you can get, not by along shot, but they are far from the worst. They are a classic standby for certain shades as well. I have to admit I have a soft spot for these since I inherited my mom's pre-tested when she decided oil wasn't for her as a medium. and while those tubes are long gone, I still rely on them as a fall back when I can't get other brands in the shade I want.

They are a good value, and nice range.

For people having cap issues, I'd like to say I have never had a cap issue with any paint because I was taught to smear a thin layer of petroleum jelly on my palette and then put the tip of the tube flat on the palette in front of the petroleum film (so no jelly gets in the paint) and slide the tube through the jelly so a thin layer gets on the threads before capping the tube. This Seals it air tight and lubricates it so next time you use it the cap unscrews like a new tube. I have tubes of pre-tested that are 20 years old and the paint is as fresh as the day I bought them and still open like new.

I would recommend these for serious artists who are trying oils for the first time, because you can get a good palette of color for a reasonable price.

I recently switched to Grumbacher's Pre-Tested Artists' oils from a different brand's student grade. These pigments can be subtly different than other brand colors with the same name, but they are remarkably different in the way colors behave when you start mixing them together. These paints are wonderful for expanding on your understanding of color theory and really maintain a vibrancy when mixing colors. For example, you can knock out the coolness of prussian blue without loosing the depth of a painting when you mix it with cad red or yellow. Other brands just turn muddy black.

I've been using these paints in my studio classes, and I have to say that they're pretty great. Grumbacher has some very nice pigments, and a decent range of colors to choose from. The consistency is smooth and easy to work with. My one complaint is that I've had some issues with light oil separation in a couple of paint tubes, but only very rarely, and not at all to a point where it made the paint difficult to work with. If you're looking for a nice, reliable, and versatile oil paint to use, I would definitely recommend these.

As far as Dick Blick's service is concerned, shipping was much quicker than expected, all my items were packaged incredibly nicely, and the prices were fantastic, so I have absolutely zero complaints.

I solved the problem of caps splitting by calling their headquarters (Chartpak, 1-800-628-1910 Ext. 2) and asking them to send me new caps. When one splits, I can replace it immediately. The rep told me they thought they had the problem solved. It is not nearly as bad as it used to be.
