Grumbacher's Max Oil Colors are identical to conventional oil colors, with one major difference — Max Oils thin and clean up with water. With Max Oils, there is no need for special brush cleaners, turpentine, or mineral spirits.
Max Grumbacher's professional-quality, water mixable oil colors are made from the same pigments and linseed oil as Grumbacher Pre-Tested Oils, and they have comparable drying time. Max Grumbacher colors can be intermixed with any other oil colors or oil painting mediums, and they can be varnished after 6 months. Use at least 70% Max color, and no more than 30% of regular oil colors or mediums to retain the water miscible properties of Max Oil Colors.
Color Chart Note — Use this color chart as an approximation of the real color. If exact color matching is necessary, use actual samples of the materials.

Grumbacher Maxx Oils
from Charleston, SC
Comments about Grumbacher Max Artists' Water Miscible Oil Colors:
Love the rich colors, this paint is pigment packed. Love that it is low odor. Downfall of this product is that some tubes (even of the same color) have inconsistent texture.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Love my MAX !
from Waterbury, CT
I use these oils with the elderly. Like that they do not have an odor, are easy to clean up with soap and water...on the canvas and on the hands! Only downside would be if you scrub too hard you can remove the previous layer on the canvas. I only thin with the recommended linseed oil.
I have used Max products for almost 20 years..

I prefer the pigment mixture of the colors to the other producers…especially the Cerulean BlueI would prefer a greater array of some of the pigments…No company makes Mars Violet in the water soluble paints, for that matter….there are many colors that are only made in the regular oils. Some of the colors that I prefer to use, outside of the Mars Violet. I love the Azo yellows and oranges……another is Quinacridone Rose, & Earth green. I don't quite understand why there is not the array of colors in the Max color chart. I , personally , don't understand why, my fellow artists reply to me: I use the REAL oils, which, to me, is total ignorance of the product. When I paint, my whole house does not smell of chemicals, which, of course, is a health factor..Thank you.

Perfectly "Oil like"
from Madison Wisconsin
I have been painting in oils for 20 years now but the last 10 or so have been with water soluble oil paints! I like the clean up, and I have concerns about the smell of turpentine and other solvents...I have used a number of different brands but I must say I found some of them to be lacking. These are not! They are just like trad.oil paints without the concerns I had...the flow is wonderful coverage is the same as traditional oils ditto dry time, and they are still glossy. These are perfect for me! Also the variety of colors is really great! Thank you for restoring my faith in water soluble "oils"!!!
Can't use the turps. Good alternative.

I can not use Turpentines and other mediums used with the regular oils. I am highly allergic to them. I love using the water and baby oil thinner and clean up. I have found that the Grumbacher Max Artists' Water Miscible Oil Colors are very rich in their colors. The paints remain wet on my pallet for several days while allowing for quicker drying time than regular oils. I would gladly recommend this product as a great alternative and enjoyment of being able to work with oils.

Good as Oils
from Rialto, Ca
My husband is the artist, I am the purchaser. Max Artists' Water Miscible Oils are a good value for oils. My hubby says they are as good as oils, without the cleaning mess. He really likes working with them. He ask for this brand, over and over. He mixes them with many other mediums. Do not hesitate to buy.
Good product always use it
Works great... Good coverage

I am a beginner painter, and these paints are cheaper and have better quality compared to other water micible oil paints in the same price range (also my professor recommends these for beg painters).
