Workable fixative in many ways
Comments about Grumbacher Final Fixative:
I use this fixative to secure my charcoal drawing on canvas before I start painting in acrylics. It is "workable," ie, it will not reject the next paint layer. I have also used it to fix my charcoal on paper drawings. (matte) It does slightly alter the appearance of the charcoal application, but that is the devil in the details whenever you apply a fix. A light application is best to start the fix process. Too much spray at the start will soak the charcoal (or pastels) and possibly alter how it holds onto the surface.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Ruined my work.
My piece was done in soft pastels and the product considerably darkened my work. I used the matte variety and yet it left and uneven shine throughout. After working many hours on this piece it is ruined after application of this product.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We're truly sorry to hear about the damage to your work. With any fixative, it's important to do some testing before spraying on a finished piece. Almost all fixatives darken drawings and pastel paintings to some degree, and testing will allow you to practice your application and decide in advance whether the results will be acceptable to you. Good protection for pencil art.
Protects my colored pencil art and does not yellow over time.

I've only used mine for inks but it works really well, remember to spray somewhere with lots of ventilation

Great product at a good value

I used this product on a pastel drawing and it worked really well. It actually brought out the colors more and sealed the work well.

I use this product to fix my mixed media portraits (charcoal, watercolor, colored pencil, and pastels). It is the only one I have found that doesn't kill the colors or fade the charcoal. I'm done trying other brands - this is it for me.

This is the second time I have purchased this product and have not had any problems with clogging spray hole, or dripping. It has worked like a charm for me.

Do not use this product on soft pastels
By Rose Leduc

I used Grumbacher final fixative on several pastels; the results were terrible and uneven. While some pastels were substantially darkened, others became translucent in places, as if some of the pastel pigment had been "eaten" away by the chemicals. I was stunned as I hadn't had a problem with a fixative before; about 8 pieces were ruined. I can see why they have a disclaimer on the can; they might as well say: use of this product will ruin your artwork.

Fogs very easily, WILL RUIN YOUR PIECE
I have used this product twice, both times because it was the only fixative available, and BOTH times it left a fog over my piece. I am not overspraying or using it too heavily; literally EVERY OTHER fixative I've used in a similar manner has not had this problem. I thought it was just a fluke the first time, but no, it's this product. DO NOT BUY THIS if you don't want your hard work to be ruined. Also, the label specifically states that the manufacturer makes no claim of efficacy and takes no responsibility for what happens to your piece. Each time I've used this product, I used it as directed on pencil work which it was intended for. It is awful. Go with prismacolor or literally ANY OTHER brand of fixative.
