Welcome to dickblick
Made of student-grade white nylon synthetic fibers, Grumbacher Academy brushes are superb for oil and acrylic work. They’re soft-bristled, sleek, and ideal for any acrylic technique, including glazing, but they excel at fine detail work and applications where minimizing strokes is a must.
The gorgeous blue metallic finish over a long-handled wood shaft has incredible hand-appeal ... experience one for yourself!

Nice brush; defective handle

Comments about Grumbacher Academy Oil and Acrylic Bright:
I use Grumbacher Academy brushes often in painting on canvas with acrylics. They load well, distribute paint smoothly, and provide good coverage and control. The bristles of the brights and flats stay neat and trim, bristles never fall out, and they clean up easily. The handles of the brushes are another matter, though. The paint on them starts to chip off almost immediately, exposing what I believe is the problem: a wood handle that is very dry and often cracked already under the paint. (See photo.) Sometimes that also means that the brush ferrule or crimp is not tight on the handle, and the brush is therefore wobbly, so worse than useless. I have also got splinters from the cracked paint. And Grumbacher puts price bar stickers on their brushes with a gooey adhesive that takes 10 minutes per brush to remove. So the brush gets 5 stars, but the handle gets only 1.

Merchant response: Thank you for your review. The two most common causes of cracked lacquer are allowing the brush to sit in water or drying the brush with the tuft pointed up. Either of these practices will allow water to soak into the wood of the handle; the wood will swell and the lacquer will crack. However, if you're drying the brushes flat and not letting them sit in water, the cracking may indicate a defect that we would happily take care of. I had a academy brush for years... never knew though. Started REALLY working on my canvases, found one of the two I have and loved the way it worked. It held it's point though I used it so much; so... I ordered the rounds [3 of each] and the filberts [3 of each]; I find I work only with rounds and filberts. The rounds work best for me on edges and broad areas. I do a lot of under painting; I clean the oil paint [only media I use] with paint thinner and wash the tips with fels-naptha soap... my handles haven't lost their coating...

This is my first time using Grumbacher Academy brushes. I am very disappointed of the quailty of the handles on all of these particular brushes. I purchased these brushes about 6-7 mos ago for acrylic painting. After washing the brushes a few times with only water the handles began to peel off big flakes of the blue coating. I could may understand if I had to clean them in turpentine but with only water. It should not happen even if I was using oil paints. These brushes were advertised as being for both mediums.
