I teach acrylic painting and I've been using Liquitex "Basics" brand for years -I used Grumbacher academy acrylics recently in my classes and found that they have more viscosity ( thicker ) than Liquitex Basics and keep their color better when dry. I think that they are the best acrylics in their category.

I believe academy acrylics are not very good acrylics. They dry too fast, they have too much water or liquid in them, and do not mix well with other paints. The colors are not very pretty, and they are probably some of the most disapointing paints I have ever used. They are disapointing even for being student grade paints. I used this products for portaits on canvas. I believe I did not get my moneys worth. 02-15-2010

I usually ONLY use professional artist acrylics, but there are just some colors Grumbacher student grade acrylics have that no one else has. I love them and use them when the color is needed.

Way back when I was aspiring painter in my early 20s, I scooped up a whole bunch of Academy acrylics. Now, it is thirty years later, and I'm running low on purple, so I fetch an old tube of Academy Dioxazine Purple that I still have even after moving twice.

After applying a good amount of Blick Acrylic Gesso to the aluminum I was working with, I applied two to three coats of this (student grade) purple. When I was finished, the color looked so rich. Now, that's a testimonial!

Also, recommended: Payne's Gray, Mars Black, Thio Violet, Thalo Green and Alizarian Crimson.

I feel naked as a painter without certain hues available, yet some become hard to find. It's been years since I had Thio Violet. I had no idea Grumbacher made it, but they are an excellent source. Very reliable. I bought without hesitation and am a happy camper.
