Perfect for getting tones correct.
from Quincy, IL
Works well for drawing and sketching when you need to get all the tones well coordinated. It is small enough to be quite portable, but it does require care not to bend it. The finder is made of fairly heavy material, but it could be bent if care is not taken. The price at Dick Blick was the best. Of course save on shipping by doing a larger order!!I really appreciate the quick delivery from this company. It is one of my favorite places to go for art supplies.
Purchased for using in an art class. It should prove to be very helpful.
from Alamogordo nm
Shared with art class. Really great to use in a class that is discussing black and whit value tones. Though I made my own, this is handy and portable. In fact, the professor is using his to help us "see" the different tone values better.

Every artist must learn tone values. They are essential to recording three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. This handy little tool should be kept close by at all times. It becomes as important as brushes, paint, or anything else in the studio.

Useful Teaching Tool!
By Miss R
from Aurora, IL
I teach a beginning drawing class at the high school level and one of our projects involves shading with value to recreate a grayscale photograph of the students' faces. Most students at this level have difficulty recognizing how dark certain areas of their skin can be and are afraid to jump in and make it darker. I use this tool in class to compare the dark values in their photo with that of their drawing. They are usually very suprised by the difference! The only downside to this product is that over time it has a tendency to fade or become yellowed.

I would buy this product again
For determining the value, this little gizmo is perfect. Works in any light. I had difficulty with the red compose-it grid in low light situations so this is what I turn to.
from Cleveland, Oh.
Very useful tool in helping to determine light and shadows in drawing. I will be ordering another one, to use simultaneously with reference photos, and comparing with my copied drawing.

I provide one of these to all of the students in my mosaic portraiture and realism workshops. It is indispensible for helping them to learn to recognize value levels in their work.

Smart, Simple, Cheap
from New HOpe/Lambertville, nj
I'm a newbie to oil painting and my eye still needs training, this is helping a lot. I just throw it in my box and its there when I need it. I'm getting better at picking values so hope to outgrow it soon.
