Don't recommend--it creates bubbles
from Springfield, VA
Comments about Golden Self-Leveling Clear Gel Medium:
I have tried this product a few times, and see a real problem with it leaving bubbles that mar the artwork. I read that a product from Liquitex doesn't do this, and regret buying several jars of this gel by Golden
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

My favorite for priming and finishing
from louisville, Ky
I love how smoothly he product applies and how clearly without any marks. When I use this product, I want it to protect the materials underneath while showing the patterns beneath. It is a great product that can be used just like its name, for the sake of smoothness of to create interesting peaks and textures. I love this product!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
not self leveling and do see every paint brush mark
from Denver, Co
This "can" give a nice finish but does not entirely self level as I can clearly see EVERY brush stroke (as another reviewer commented). I have used gac 500 with it and also tried water but am finding it difficult to lock down for an even appearance so i will try a roller (another reviewer suggested) but will switch to another product for finish in the future. I would like to try the 3D effect i have read about here.

Great 3-D Layering product
I used this instead of epoxy resin to make layers of clear coating over and between acrylic painting. I used this as it is a good protector and self-leveling...made a great 3-D effect. The depth was not as prominent as using resin, and you had to reapply several coatings per layer to get the raised 3-d effect, but worked well.
Smooth, Shiny and Flexible
I use self leveling gel on journal pages that I want to be flexible and I love it.

Evens out surfaces
I sometimes add a little retarder to this to give me time to spread it on the whole panel before it starts to dry. Evens out the surface, high gloss, nice.
Love this product
I bought this product for a project in Suxi Blu's Mixed Media Girls. I have found other uses for it. It leaves a really clear, shiny finish on your projects. I have used it to seal handmade paper beads, handmade collaged journal covers, mixed media canvases, and collaged art journal pages. I absolutely love using this stuff. It will always be a part of my supply arsenal. Thanks to Suzi Blu. (p.s. I also highly recommend her above mentioned book)
Self leveling Gel
from Portland, OR
I used the product to create little shapes I used for building in an Italian village scene. I added a few drops of color to keep the finish product transparent. I pour it into multiple loaf non stick loaf pans. Best to spay with non stick oil and wipe it off, leaving a slight film. Let cure for several days. No direct sunlight or it shrinks away from edges. Also can pour larger shapes adding colors. Then spray with Golden Acrylic Flow Release. go easy on the spray. Some colors will spread wildly giving a watercolor on wet paper look. Look for happy accidents, and you'll have some great designs. peal off the dry film. wash off the oil on the back. Use gloss acrylic medium under and on top of to attach to painting or board. You can paint on the gel, add textures like glass beads or add them into the self leveling gel when you pour it. I'll try the Freezer Paper suggested by a previous reviewer.

from Memphis, TN area
I use this gel over watercolors and acrylics much like a varnish. I have had no problems with brush strokes showing. I do use it rather thickly. Sometimes I pour in a flat pan and dip my art piece (front and back sides) and don't brush on. You can then place on freezer paper (slick side) to dry and self-level and it won't stick. It is high gloss and I find much easier to use than varnish. It is affordable, goes a long way and lasts a very long time on the shelf.

Not entirely self leveling
from New York City
I used the gel as a varnish top coat. I worked very quickly and brushed it all over the surface of a painted, collaged panel which I have pre-sealed with acrylic gloss medium. It had a lovely, clear finish but it isn't entirely self leveling as I can clearly see EVERY brush stroke. It might work better to use a roller (though I'm guessing you'll still get a slight orange peel effect.I've decided to go back to using Golden Polymer Varnish with UVLS (Gloss). Not as think and shiny but then I don't see the brush strokes.
