Golden's Mineral Spirit Acrylic (MSA) Varnish with Ultraviolet Light Stabilizers (UVLS) is a mineral spirit based acrylic resin system that can be applied to acrylic, oil, and alkyd painted surfaces. It is removable with mineral spirits after drying and can be used for interior or exterior applications. It is available in your choice of Gloss, Matte, or Satin finishes.
Note — Golden MSA Acrylic Varnish has a thicker viscosity than traditional varnishes, which helps maintain a more even suspension of solid particles. It must be thinned with Golden MSA Solvent before use.
Golden MSA Solvent
Golden's Mineral Spirit Acrylic Solvent is the ideal solvent for thinning Golden MSA Varnishes, which must be thinned before use. MSA Solvent assures clear, clean, even application time after time. Golden MSA Solvent can also be used to remove MSA Varnish at a later time for restoration purposes.

This varnish is really quite good. It is my first time using it, but it went down really easily. I think the isolation coat (recommended for acrylic paints) was a good idea, despite the extra expense. I used it for a 24ft x 4ft outdoor mural, on MDO panel that will be getting a lot of sun and weather. Time will tell if the mural will last throughout the ages, but this varnish went down clear. I used two coats of glossy MSA and it really kept my darks dark and brights bright. I have used other Golden varnish for indoor murals and this MSA is the best result I've had so far.I appreciate the great customer service. i spoke with a representative about my purchase before I clicked submit and was glad I did!
I was hesitant about purchasing this after reading reviews that it was difficult to open the jar. But - it's really quite easy if you follow the directions. (use a screw driver, puncture the lid & pop the lid off) The fumes are very strong, need lots of ventilation! Gave my work a nice finish.

Impossible to open 16 oz bottle

It might be the best varnish around, but I'll never know. There's a metal insert as a seal inside the mouth of the jar. I've tried prying it out with a knife, unscrewing it, and finally driving a screwdriver through it to pull it out. That was partially successful, there's a small hole in the metal plug, but I haven't been able to pry it out. After all the bashing, I'm not even sure if the seal of the lid will be good if I were to remove the metal inner plug. Golden - if you're going to seal something for shipping that requires some kind of special trick to get it out, please put the instructions on the label. I broke down and bought another bottle of the Liquitex Soluvar. Not sure what I'm going to do with this bottle.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: We are sorry to hear of the difficulty you have experienced opening this varnish. To remove this metal piece carefully drive a screwdriver into the metal then push down lightly with the screwdriver at an angle to the opening. Slowly increase pressure until the metal pops out.

This is a very expensive varnish, from my point of view, but I am glad I put out the money for it. I had been using a water-based varnish. This MSA UVLS varnish is in a whole different world from that! Brought out brilliant colors, allows for beautiful definition of any brush strokes or physical details (I use this on mixed-media sculpture). The fumes are considerably less horrible than the headache-causing fumes from the water-based varnish; I could work inside in front of an open window and still be fairly comfortable. The manufacturer advises using a 50/50 dilution with mineral spirits for brush work: I used that recipe and was very happy with it. If you mix and work with it right away, just be darned sure to mix it for a good long time. Better to let it sit a bit; mixing a couple of hours before you work makes sure that the two elements do not separate while you're working. I failed to mix thoroughly and stir occasionally, and the varnish all went to the bottom of my pot; I ended up using nothing but mineral spirits and didn't know it had happened until I poured the mix into a jar and saw that the varnish was sitting in the bottom. Great stuff, all in all!
