Golden Hard MSA (Mineral Spirit Acrylic) Topcoat can be used over a wide variety of paints, including acrylic, oil, alkyd, egg tempera, watercolor, and casein. It dries to a tough, non-flexible protective finish. As a topcoat for acrylics, it provides a harder, lower tack surface than other topcoats and is much less susceptible to dirt and marring.
With the benefit of UVLS (ultraviolet light filters and stabilizers), this topcoat provides increased resistance to the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, making it suitable for exterior as well as interior applications. For restoration purposes, the topcoat may be removed with aromatic solvents.
Golden Hard MSA Gloss Topcoat dries to a highly reflective finish. Hard MSA Satin Topcoat offers moderate reflection, similar to most matte topcoats. The Hard MSA Matte Topcoat finish is exceptionally flat. The different finishes can be intermixed or used sequentially to achieve the sheen you desire.
Golden MSA Solvent
Golden's MSA Solvent is the ideal solvent for thinning Golden MSA Topcoats, which must be thinned before use. MSA Solvent assures clear, clean, even application time after time. This solvent can also be used to remove an MSA topcoat at a later time for restoration purposes.

Comments about Golden Hard MSA Topcoat:
We are using this in a public art project to paint fiberglass rabbits, Conejo Cottontails. When combined with the varnish, it gives an amazing gloss.

Varnishing a Cow
from Grover Beach, CA
I needed to varnish a fiberglass cow I painted for a charity event. Golden Hard MSA Varnish worked great! I followed the directions to mix it the the Golden MSA solvent and it was beautifully smooth and easy to apply, even on a 3D surface. Clean up was also done with the solvent. Definitely use this in a well ventilated area.

This varnish seems really thick, it isn't easy to use, still working with it and hope that ultimately it will work out.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for your review. For a brush application, Golden recommends thinning to a ratio of 3 parts varnish to 1 part MSA solvent, but you can adjust that as needed, adding more solvent to get the varnish to a more brushable consistency. If you find it’s still not working well for you, please feel welcome to reach out to our Product Information Team. I puchased the gloss, satin and matte varnishes from Blick and followed the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. I applied the gloss varnish first to seal my artwork using the specified proportions of varnish to solvent by the manufacturer. I then intermixed the satin with the gloss as my second layer after letting the first layer dry for 4-5 hours. The result was TERRIBLE -- various areas of the artwork's surface bloomed so badly that I had to remove the varnish with the MSA solvent. I re-applied the varnish following the manufacturer's instructions again. And it still bloomed. Ruined my artwork. I truly cannot recommend this product. Use at your own risk.
Merchant response: We're truly sorry for the experience you had with this varnish. The blooming you describe may be the result of varnish application in too-humid conditions. Golden recommends using a source of warm, forced air over the surface to induce the evaporation of excess moisture and restore clarity. Please know that our Product Specialists are available to help you troubleshoot and advise on how to best test a varnish prior to application on a valuable piece.
