I like the effect created with this product, but I found it to be difficult to work with at first. When it was applied to a gessoed surface, it easily flaked and fell off when it dried. So, I tried putting a light coat of wood glue on top of the gesso, and then layered the crackle paste on top of the (still wet) glue. After two to three days, the crackle effect sets, and then I add a thick coat of acrylic gel to seal the surface. If I want the surface to have color, I mix a bit of acrylic paint or ink to the paste before applying. These tricks have worked really well for me, but I feel that this product is a bit more problematic than most people will have the patience for.

This Crackle Paste can be a little tricky to work with. I found I get better cracking results over gel than I do Gesso. I use this on a 3d surface to create and because it is so fragile I use a few coats of Wood Hardener to stabilize the surface before adding my final color and/or effect. This product can be hard to find and I like that I can count on DB to have it when I need it.

Some cracks formed where greater than 1/16" thick, none where thinner. Surface is extremely fragile. Tried carving in to create cracks where none existed. It turned to powder and flaked at the edges. Thick coat of paint helps protect it, but concerned about how soft it is.
