Golden Gel Mediums offer artists many ways to build texture. They range in consistency from pourable to moldable with varying degrees of sheen and transparency. They can be used to create glazes, extend paints, and change finishes. Some gels incorporate pumice, glass, or acrylic granules that impart unique reflective, rough, or absorbent surface qualities.
Gels can be thought of as colorless paint, as they are composed of 100% acrylic polymers similar to acrylic paint. They can also act as adhesives in collage and mixed media that dry to form continuous films, offering excellent flexibility and resistance to chemicals, water, and ultraviolet light.
Clear Granular Gel
Made from clear acrylic granular solids, this gel is designed to add texture without altering color.
Clear Tar Gel
Designed to produce a stringy, tar-like feel in a colorless gel. The gel is excellent for "dripping" over surfaces. The more it is mixed, the stringier it becomes. Letting the mixture sit before use allows foam bubbles to rise.
Extra Heavy Gel
These gels have the same characteristics as the Heavy Gel above, but they can hold better peaks and are ideal for impasto techniques.
Along with the High Solid Gels, they are the thickest of the Golden Gels. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
Extra Heavy Gel / Molding Paste
A blend of heavy gel and molding paste, dries to a satin, semi-opaque finish. Blends well with colors. Excellent for increasing viscosity and building surfaces.
Glass Bead Gel
Clear gel with densely packed glass beads. Adds texture and luminous effects.
Thicker in consistency than Golden Heavy Body Acrylic colors, these gels hold peaks and dry translucent. Blend them with colors to increase body. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
High Solid Gel
The thickest of the gels. Holds high peaks, useful for simulating oil paint behavior. Contains less water and more acrylic solids, so it shrinks less than other gels.
These gels have the same thickness and creamy consistency as Golden Heavy Body Acrylic colors.
They extend paint and regulate translucency without affecting consistency, hold moderate peaks and textures, and are ideal for glazing. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.
Included in this convenient introductory set is one 2 oz (60 ml) jar of Soft Gel (Gloss), Regular Gel (Semi-Gloss), Extra-Heavy Gel (Matte), Light Molding Paste, Coarse Pumice Gel, and Clear Tar Gel.
Self-Leveling Clear Gel
The thinnest of the gels. Designed to produce an even film with excellent clarity.
Thinner than Golden Heavy Body Acrylic colors, these gels are moderately pourable, hold only slight peaks, and are ideal for glazing and other techniques that require transparency.
Soft Gels can also be used to create a non-removable isolation coat over any painting. To do so, gels must be thinned with water at a two-to-one ratio, and applied prior to any coats of varnish. Available in Gloss, Matte, and Semi-Gloss.

Golden Soft Gel (Gloss)

I purchased Golden Soft Gel (Gloss) after a near disaster spray varnishing my painting.A fellow artist told me about using an isolation layer to apply over the finished painting using 2 parts of Golden Soft Gel (Gloss) and one part of water. According to Golden tech support, make sure your acrylic painting has dried at least 3 days before applying the isolation layer. I tried this on a practice painting and found that for at least Santa Fe, where it is dry, 2 to 1 is not quite thin enough. I called Golden tech support and they were really great about educating me on how to apply an isolation layer using a good brush (synthetic fiber) and that the 2 to 1 ratio of soft gel to water is only a starting point. You can add more water and thin it down even more. Whatever you do, don't keep going back over the painting because once it starts to set which is pretty quick, going back over it will leave big brush marks which are very difficult to undo.The isolation layer is always done in gloss and is a permanent layer between the paint and the varnish. I use conservation varnish with UV inhibitor in it so that at some point if I ever have to remove the varnish to restore the painting, it will come off with mineral spirits or ammonia (depending on which kind you use) but it will not damage the paint because of the isolation layer covering it. Golden tech support told me that even if you want a mat finish on your final painting, always use a soft gel gloss for the isolation layer. Allow the isolation 3 days to dry before varnishing. Then, to varnish, either brush or spray using gloss varnish on any preliminary coats . It is only on the final coat that you use Satin or Mat to get the mat finish you want. This is so that the white in the Satin or Mat finish does not build up if you were to use them in the preliminary coats.Anyway, this is about isolation layers and although it adds more work and a bit of nervousness to the process, it turns out to be the most professional way to go and in the end, may save you from things like a varnish disaster that happened to me.

I use this product to adhere items (paper, lace, fabric, etc.) to my mixed media art pieces. I also use it to seal a layer. The thing I love about using it to seal a layer is that if I use a rubber stamp, or write words with a pen or other instrument, I can wipe it right off and do it over--the gel medium allows this. Love that!

Best paint ever!

I use this product to create very thick paint that I extrude onto the canvas to create dimensional paintings that are thick and "skin-like." I absolutely trust and love the Golden thickening gel and would never use another brand!

I recently took a class with a Golden Representative/artist and had fun doing all sorts of things with the products. For instance, on some pieces I just did (in acrylic) that had lots of texture from using canvas, and coarse surfaces, I painted over them with a 2:1 mixture of soft gel gloss:water. I really liked that I could keep the high texture, but also protect it.

I use the heavy and extra-heavy high gloss medium, mixing with acrylic paints at about a 1 to 1 ratio to create heavy texture, particularly for near objects in a painting, or for flowers, of any other object the painter wants to stand out. The white gel quickly mixes with the color chosen.
