This acrylic liquid surfacing medium dries to a high absorbency, porous, paper-like surface. Applied over gessoed canvas, it allows for raw canvas-like staining techniques and watermedia applications with acrylic or watercolor paint. Lightfast, permanent, and flexible.

Comments about Golden Absorbent Ground:
I have been experimenting with this special purpose gesso in acrylic painting as fresh underpainting white, later, after the painting is fully developed. It will take awhile to get this to work but the "watercolor" characteristic of paint is usually in the beginning not after the whole surface has been worked with lots of color. The texture is interesting too. I tried it as a ground on wood and the texture is gritty and very absorbent. There is a beauty to oil paintings with layers and layers that eventually have a pebbled surface (Balthus). This ground has the potential to get acrylics to work that way too.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Loving these Absorbent Grounds!
By Lisa DO

This is my first time using absorbent grounds, and I wish I'd known about them sooner! What a difference they make with water-based markers on top of non-pourous surfaces. Without them, it wouldn't be possible, and now I can use my water color pencils, crayons, markers and paints to my heart's content.

Lightweight, flexible, sandable, takes color well.
I use this to prep canvas for watercolor and ink. It works really well, I have not used a similar product so I do not have a comparison. I think it is a little expensive, and the warning label is a little scary. All in all a good product and I will continue to purchase it.
This product creates new horizons in my art expressions.

Using this coating on an ordinary gessoed canvas allows for wonderfully fun creative effects with water color. It is easy to use. Once the project is completed it can be sprayed with clear acrylic coating. Now you have a watercolor painting that doesn't need glass in the frame. It can be a bit to clean it out of your application brush. I find that rinsing with warm water and dish soap makes the brush useful again for doing coatings.

I tried using this ground and liquid paints. I did not see them perform any differently compared to Blick's regular gesso. I would not purchase it again, because i don't see the point in spending the extra money
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I use Absorbent Ground 25% diluted, 3-4 coats, totally dry and lightly sanded between coats over gessoed cansas for my pen/ink/ water color pantings.I spray the finshed work very lightly with a clear laquer-I sell 6x6 and 12x 12 at a market on the Big Island, Hi. No mat, glass or framing!Easy!

The Coolest Invention
I love this stuff. After 1 or 2 coats of regular gesso, I apply the absorbent ground. Depending on how absorbent I want the ground to be, I add more coats for more absorbency. I use it for acrylic washes--I thin acrylics down so that I can paint washes on canvas or board and it looks a lot like watercolour on paper. It's fun to play with, to see what it'll do in different situations. I then like to use my oil paints over the acrylic. I hope they never stop making this!
