Welcome to dickblick
This versatile pencil is great for art, sketching, and layout work. It is a standard size, round pencil that has very soft (6B equivalent), heavy, black graphite. Pencil is pre-sharpened.

Great dark tones
Comments about General's Layout Pencil:
Use for drawing with full range of values, thick lead, smooth to blend, really deep dark tones possible.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

No Different Than a 5B
from Fort Worth, TX
I've heard a lot about how this pencil gets really dark values and is great for sketching and getting nice line quality, so I bought a pack of two at my local art store. Initially, I agreed: it is a great pencil for sketching and line work. It's pretty smooth too. But when I paired it side by side with a regular 6B pencil, I realized that they are pretty much the same, except the 6B actually got darker. I don't mean to take away from the fact that this is a good pencil, but it doesn't really have any qualities that make it stand out against a 5B or 6B pencil.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

This pencil provides the same value as Prismacolor's Ebony pencil except with a graphite sheen than may not be desirable.
5 Star for Sure
Product was better than I expected, perfect fit for our needs, will definitely order again.

You can buy these?
from san jose, ca
I was shocked to see that you can buy these...I thought they grew in sketchboxes when you left a selection of other pencils alone for a week. (I have never bought one in my life, yet seem to own about ten of them...)They are a good go-to learning pencil for teaching sketching techniques as they offer your students a statisfying line. I reccomend them usually to students who are experiencing the "fear of the paper" as they are soft, dark and glide over the paper easily. Making it easy to encourage students to really explore and connect with their surface.

Classic American Goodness

Primarily a fountain pen user but read about this in Pencil Revolution. This pencil rocks as it provides a fairly dark line that is easily read. Lead is very smooth and holds its point quite well compared to the standard yellow pencil B. Wish I got this sooner.

For sketching, I find the General's Layout Pencil to be a superior choice! The feel is smooth and you can get a lot of different tones with it from light to dark. Plus you can't beat the price! It's similar to but not quite as dark as the old Sanford Design Ebony pencils (now discontinued). You can get some nice effects using the Layout pencil for overall drawing and then using a Prismacolor Ebony pencil for darkest darks. Paired with a General's Sketch N Wash pencil and a sketchbook & brush, you have all you need for a day of field sketching!
