Non-porous Ceylon graphite cores are dense and durable. The core is "Carbo-Welded" to withstand four times the normal point pressure. The specially treated cedar wood casings sharpen easily. Pencils are pre-sharpened.

I use this product for pencil portraits of animals for clients around the country. I like the texture and the flexible quality of the pencil lead. There are no faults.

Could be better
from San Antonio, TX
Well let me cut right to the chase. I buy these pencils every school year for my advanced art classes and these are subpar pencils. As other reviwers have mentioned the pencils have a tendency to scratch the paper even when pressing lightly due to impurities in the graphite itself. The shades of pencils seem to fall in the same muted tone so you need to skip a few pencils ahead to get the stark contrast between light and dark. The way I draw is the grid method where you use a ruler and some mental math to recreate the photograph, and when I go to erase the 4h lines and shade in the background imagine my anger to find with lines showing through the background where I used the grids!!! And I was pressing so light that I couldn't even see the boxes half the time so that whole ordeal was frustrating. After hours of smoothing the background I was able to get somewhat of a desired result. Now these pencils seem like the big bad wolf but when you take in consideration of the price they are cheap, which may be a good thing if your looking for wallet friendly products. I recommend this for kids all the way until high school, because if your school is like mine art competitions in 9th grade on are no joke and being this my junior year working with them I regret not investing in something better. But if money isn't a matter to you and you're serious about your art get some better pencils that won't scratch the paper when you apply the pressure of an ant.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

great for the blackest pencil drawings and no shiny look almost like a charcoal in stead of grafite.

Something has changed
from Leavenworth, KS
For twenty years I've been primarily a digital artist, so my experience with this product was in the context of revisiting the passion of my youth for pencil drawing. I first used a Kimberly 2Bs on Bienfang and Strathmore Bristols. Someone had given me a variety of pencils and I found the Kimberly 2Bs to be very smooth and pleasant to work with. I'm not one to pinch pennies on projects so my decision to purchasing this product was based on my initial good experience, not its price. Sadly my latest experience with the 2Bs has been disappointing. They are very gritty, but only in spots, which causes them to leave tiny scratches the paper surface without warning. This damaged a project I had invested a great deal of time in. Perhaps I've discovered why they are an inexpensive pencil as it appears there are consistency problems in their manufacture. I will likely not purchase them again and will finish out the box I have on roughs only.
