The best charcoal pencils for the price

I have taught art pre-schoolthrough adult for 30 years and I'm a professional, signature painter; I've written many grants to purchase art materials from Blick through the years. Blick's General brand charcoal pencils are the best value charcoal pencils and of high quality for teaching dark to light shading, for underdrawings for realistic oil painting and for any other application requiring a range of rich dark values to whites.

Great charcoal pencils.

I personally love charcoal. The downside in my opinion, is that the charcoal pencils tend to be pretty fragile. I found 2H charcoal, which is what I bought, and I loved it because I could get crisp lines and keep them black.

Love this brand
from Denver, Colorado
I bought a Conte 2B, a Cretacolor Soft, and a General Charcoal 2B pencil to test the shading, line strength, and feel (i.e. I don't like to feel the pencil grinding on the paper) all 2B or soft. I promise you, try the same test and you'll find not only does the General have the darkest, easiest to blend charcoal pencil, but also the least gritty on the paper. For me, surprisingly, the Conte was 2nd, and the Cretacolor was the grittiest pencil of the test. Like drawing with a rock. The General pencils crushed the competition on all factors, by a huge margin, it was that big of a difference. Forget the names and try the test, I dare you.
