A retired art teacher, Chuck offers small drawing classes in his studio for adult beginners. "This is the perfect drawing kit for an adult beginner class," he tells us.
"It has all the materials I want to introduce them to, and in one neat package that is easy to hand out at the first class. I keep a few extra boxes of compressed charcoal on hand, and an extra box of kneaded erasers, because they go through those fast.
"General has many fine sets ... this is just one of them. There is one for any class, and the price is always right. It ends up costing me more to hire a model for the last two sessions than it does for all the course materials."

Comments about General's Charcoal Pencil Drawing Kit No. 15:
The charcoal runs smoothly; I experience hardly any problems. The white charcoal is perfect for black paper and the kneaded eraser molds easily to the shape you want. I love erasing with it because it doesn't destroy my paper. Excellent charcoal pencils! #sweepstakes

Good Product, Unbeatable Price
from Pemberton, NJ
I could buy General's Charcoal set elsewhere for maybe a tiny bit less, but I trust Blick to carefully pack my product and ship it out quickly. If I have issues, I contact Customer Service and they assist me promptly. As for the General's Charcoal Drawing Set No. 15, the charcoal blacks and the white pencil lay down on textured paper firm, but smoothly. I use a sander to sharpen each pencil into a proper point, and stick with the included sharpener included in this set.Unlike other charcoal sets that are far too expensive, the General's set has an unbeatable price alongside the high quality that it gives. Wood casings on the pencils don't snap, crack or chip. It is good to use caution with pressure when applying any charcoal pencil as the core is soft and can break easily. I haven't had any issues with my General's pencils snapping off tips, but then I haven't oversharpened them into a long point either. This is my second set of General's Charcoal Pencil Drawing Set No. 15. My first one that I bought ten years ago for my college drawing class has kept in tip-top shape with careful storing in an airtight pencil box and away from moisture. Its funny because I had actually forgotten that I had bought a set ten years until a week after I recieved my new set from Blick. I was shocked to find that my Charcoal Black AND White pencils from General's both were still incredibly smooth without irregular chunks from the binder becoming unstable with time. And that brings me to what I like best about this brand of charcoal pencils. The consistency of their core textures. I don't get hard and soft spots on my points as I draw, which is frustrating to any artist using any kind of charcoal, chalk, and pastel medium. With General's I always know that I produce a good, solid, and uninterrupted line with every stroke... and no unfortunate surprises that come with some more expensive brands.#Sweepstakes

These items were purchased for my wife. She said she has used these charcoal pencils and loves them. They are great. She hasn't had an opportunity to use the other items yet but is looking forward to many hours of enjoyable artwork.

I bought these for a life drawing class and they are the perfect set! Much better than buying each item individually!
Head of the Class

The drawing kits both charcoal and color are fantastic! We're taking a drawing to oil class for a hobby so we didn't want to spend outrageously, and voilà, they're just what the teacher required and then some. He only required one pencil, one eraser and one sharpener. The kits purchased had (5) charcoal pencils in assorted degrees, (1) charcoal white, (3) compressed charcoal sticks in assorted degrees, (1) compressed charcoal white stick, (1) carbon sketch pencil, (1) sharpener, and (1) kneaded eraser!! I checked other sites for the same products, most were only sold separately and all were for a much higher price. I'm loving it here at Dick Blick! I even love that the kit box slides from either end so it's easier to carry and doubles as the case for the pencils / supplies!

Generals Charcoal Set #15
from rockville, md
I am a professional artist. I draw and I teach people to draw. I make sure each student busy this set for the class I teach. This set plus premier prismacolors. The prices from dickblick.com are reasonable and very very good and I starting my students with the best drawing tools and for drawing it really makes a huge difference to learn on the tools you will be using as an artist. Your drawings will already be better by using the right tools. If you learned on other pencils you are going to have to learn all knew pencil numbers and charcoal colors will be different and why not start out using the best. I make sure my students know there is nothing better to use. They treat their pencil and charcoal sets with respect and they respect what each took can do. I teach specific techniques and we utilize all the pieces in the Generals and prismacolor sets. I been drawing for over 40 years and I tried all the different brands and these are absolutely the very best money can buy for drawing and if you buy them from dickblick.com your going to get the best price too.

Great starter kit for charcoal drawing
from Yucaipa, CA
Like the title says, this is a wonderful starter kit for beginning charcoal drawing (along with some vine or willow charcoal). I bought this kit for my two beginner college drawing classes, and I'm glad I did so.Everything blends well, and the eraser works perfectly.

Beats the Competition!
I mainly use this product for portrait work be it human or animal, but I use them in lanscaping and scenery drawing as well. In the past, I have primarily been a Prismacolor Premier customer, but I grew aggravated with the leads of my charcoal pencils breaking constantly while sharpening them. It didn't matter what technique I used. I would always sharpen about two inches off of a Prismacolor pencil before I was able to get it back to a decent point without it breaking. So, I went in search of pencils that wouldn't do this. That's when I decided to try to General Pencil #15 Charcoal Set. I haven't looked back. The pencils lay down the charcoal nicely and blend even better. My only hope is that General Pencil continue to produce this quality. As long as they do, I will continue to be a customer.
