"The Tools of Contemporary Masters"
Since 1980, Gamblin has handcrafted luscious oil colors and contemporary painting mediums that are true to historic working properties, yet safer and more permanent. All of Gamblin's oil painting materials are handcrafted at the company's wind-powered factory in Portland, Oregon. These are art materials you can trust for permanence and studio safety — from the industry leader.
Rabbit skin glue is the traditional size for fabric support on panels. It seals porous fabric and isolates it from ground or oil paints.
Stretching the canvas is easy, because the size shrinks as it dries. It is mixed with water to make a strong adhesive. However, atmospheric changes may result in movement, causing aged oil paintings to crack.

Difficult to obtain in crystal form. Great price.

Accumulating the ingredients necessary to create a nimbus for iconography. Have not used this product yet but it seems to be exactly what I have used in the past.

Quantity being mixed
I am a first time user of RSG. The mixing information was spread over the top and side edge of the box. Of course you have to cut the box open to get to the product. Better if the instructions are mounted either on top or bottom of the box. Also the mixing instructions should tell the user how many square inches (or feet) the mixture will cover. I had two 12/16 panels to cover and threw out more than I used. In addition, further instruction as to the longevity of the mixed product would help.
Great product will buy from BLICK again!

Great traditional ground
I paint direct with oil paints, often using heavy impastos. This product works great as a first ground on raw canvas. I would, however, recommend using twice the amount of glue per quart: the box says 3 tablespoons, I use 6. The glue is relatively cheap, so doubling up is not a problem. Two coats of the glue on the canvas front, with another on the back, once dried, makes a considerable difference in the amount of gesso you will need to use. Where I used to use 4 coats, I now use 2 (Blick Studio Gesso). I also recommend you follow the gesso with a heavy coat of Gamblin's Oil Painting Ground. It takes a week to dry, but the final result will save on oil paint and improve the richness and look of your paintings.
