PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) is a contemporary size for fabric support. On linen and cotton canvas, it prevents the fabric from absorbing atmospheric moisture that eventually causes swelling and shrinking, and ultimately, paint cracking.
PVA Sizing retains its flexibility. Neutral pH means that it will not yellow.

Exactly what I expected

Comments about Gamblin PVA Sizing:
I used the pva for the first time to size linen for a large piece. I read the previous reviews and was aware of difficulties with getting the canvas stretched tightly. I ironed my linen multiple times and got it as close to wrinkle free as a could and because it still had deep creases, decided to stretch it and then apply the pva size. When the pva was wet, the linen swelled and became taught, any wrinkles in the fabric came out and it looked beautiful. when it dried, it was back to having a little slack and not quite as drum tight as I prefer. I had stretched as tight as i could manage before applying the sizing and once the pva was applied to both sides and dry, it looked the same as before sizing: no added tautness. So I used the 8 wedge keys for the stretcher bars and lightly and evenly tapped out the frame and it looks perfect. I barely had to adjust the frame. I then used Gamblin's oil ground. I love the way the canvas came out, it was a big adjustment from rabbit skin glue and traditional gesso, but it is worth figuring out for the added archival benefits, especially for commissioned works.When I do this again I will likely size the canvas on the wall before stretching it over the frame: tac or staple the linen on a big flat wall, stretched tight to free any wrinkles, and size it there on the wall. This way I cold completely cover both sides and have a more archival piece and I don't think that I would be losing out on the size helping me stretch, because as I mentioned, it didn't tighten up the linen on the stretcher bars.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I use this to size linen in place of rabbit skin glue. It's a little more difficult to use, because it has to be painted on the front and the back and has to be stretched on a different support while it's being prepared. Once it's dry, it can be stretched on the bar it's meant to go on. It looks beautiful, though and is not water soluble after it dries. The linen is a little bit darker when it dries, but it's not noticeable unless it's next to an unprimed piece.
I would buy this product again and again

Used the product to protect a wood panel so I could paint on it. The product needs a system to pour it out. Its really water so its hard to pour with the top it has now.

Not Archival – it's an acidic PVA
So, I ordered this PVA size thinking it would save me time during some coating testing I was doing. It turns out that this product has an acidic pH and is totally unsuitable for any long term image stability. Total waste of money and time. It's disappointing to see Gamblin's name on it. I'm now mixing my own solution from an acid free PVA that drys and tests with an acid free profile. I can't recommend this stuff to anyone and it's been annoying to encounter this problem.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
More expensive than rabbit skin glue

While I do believe it is more archival than rabbit skin glue, it is a lot more expensive. Takes quite a bit to cover a canvas. I will use on my more ambitious works when I am using linen only.

Mixed Media Must

I prefer to use colored pencils over markers in my work. When applied alone, this Gamblin PVA Sizing seals the paper without creating the ridges that applicator brushes produce in a heavier bodied product. Your pencil lines reflect the original surface of the paper, while reducung the blotter like effect especially journal pages seem prone to.However, my everyday ground is a mixture of gesso and PVA size, 1:1 or 1:2. It is often difficult to tell if the paper has been prepared because this combo allows the inherant paper textures to remain true and provides the perfect base for whatever media I choose to combine: watercolor, acrylic, glued papers, sprays. It extends the workable wet time yet isn't waterproof and shiney like a mod podge type product.
