Gamblin Oil Painting Ground is the top choice for a new generation of painters looking for a convenient, non-toxic alternative to traditional lead oil grounds. Like all Gamblin products, it has been formulated to exhibit true historic working properties, yet is safer and more permanent.
The binder in Gamblin Oil Painting Ground makes it more flexible and faster-drying than lead/linseed oil grounds, which must dry for six months. Gamblin Oil Ground is ready for painting within a week. And because the percentage of pigments is so much higher than in acrylic gessos, painters only need to apply two coats of Gamblin Oil Ground instead of the recommended four coats of an acrylic gesso.
Cotton or linen canvas primed with Gamblin Oil Painting Ground will be stiffer than canvas primed with an acrylic gesso, yet more flexible than a canvas prepared with a traditional oil primer.
Gamblin Oil Painting Ground is made in the USA, at the company's wind-powered factory in Portland, Oregon.

Wonderful, Fast Drying Ground
Comments about Gamblin Oil Painting Ground:
I brought this to repaint over some of my old canvasses, I'd been using acrylic gesso but found it couldn't stand up to the oil I was putting over it. Switched to this ground and it's been fantastic. It's ready in just a week and gives excellent tooth for strong brushwork.

Gamblin Oil Painting Ground is Great!...
By Wade the Painter

I use Gamblin Oil Painting Ground on Birch panels for all my plein air oil paintings. It is stable, consistent and perfect for my needs.
Will make this a basic supply from now on.

So happy to find a safer alternative to lead grounds and long term untested acrylics. It levels smoothly and dries within 24 hours.

Great using over acrylic gesso canvas
I add a layer or two of this over commercially stretched canvases. Its worth it. Helps keep the expensive paints sitting on top, not sinking in and losing color and body. In my climate it takes about 10 days to dry fully. I had to experiment to get the dilution with OMS right so it doesn't spread too thickly.
Best painting surface for oils--period.

Gamblin has an excellent instructional video on their website showing how to use this product. Whether you are painting on panels or on stretched canvas thiis oil painting ground is far superior to acrylic gessos. It covers so well and provides such a great "tooth" that I'll never go back to regular gessos. It's also economical because a little goes a long way in comparison to "gessos" in general.

Two coats are recommended and satisfactory. I applied 4 for a very smooth surface.

Great quality and easy application. Convenient substitute for lead white oil priming! I will buy this again.

I am experimenting with diiferent applications. One where I first put down a layer of PVA size and another where I just use the ground on raw canvas. In order to understand how to use the product, there is a good video on Gamblin home site that explains the process. Each time I have used it, it is easy to apply and work with.

Levels out nice, dries fast for a ground. I've been painting 30 years and have used Gamblin paints for about 3 years. Great stuff.

Does exactly what it claims; impeccable.
from Phoenix Az
I used this for priming raw canvas or on wood panels before oil painting, sometimes over acryllic gesso/pre-primed ready made canvas. I can't imagine why the other people had a hard time getting it to dry. I do live in Arizona, but also, to allow for that, it did dry even faster than they indicated. Humidity levels may affect it, but we are in the house, climate controled somewhat. I do think perhaps it could have been applied too thick/needed a bit of thinning. So far the product is exactly as they say it is/performs as they claim. If I would have had the drying problem I would have only given it 4 stars because with a pre made product I don't think it should have to be thinned, etc. I did not think it covered as much for the price of it than I would have liked, although I only bought a small can to start. Was durable when dry, too.
