Developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Gamblin Gamvar Gloss Varnish saturates and gives greater depth to the colors in your painting and gives your work a unified and protective semi-gloss surface.
Virtually odorless, premixed, and ready to apply, Gamvar Gloss goes on water-clear, stays water-clear, and can be easily and safely removed with Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits.
Gamvar Gloss can be applied with a brush when the thickest areas of your painting are thoroughly dry and firm to the touch. Spray application is not recommended.
The 4.2 oz size covers approximately 80 square feet (7.5 square meters). The 8.5 oz size covers approximately 160 square feet (15 square meters). The 16.9 oz size covers approximately 320 square feet (30 square meters).
To achieve different finishes, you can also use Gamvar in Matte or Satin. Gamvar Matte reduces surface sheen while maintaining the deepest values in your painting. Gamvar Satin saturates the colors in your work but dries to a lower gloss level compared to original Gamvar Gloss.
Note — Original formula Gamvar Varnish is now called Gamvar Gloss. The formula hasn't changed, just the name.

Disappointed in SATIN
from San Jose, CA
Comments about Gamblin Gamvar Varnish:
This review is for the new SATIN sheen. I typically have used the regular glossy Gamvar and been very happy with it. Sadly, the satin was far more matte than I wanted. Combining the two created inconsistent results. If you're looking for a step down from full gloss, this is not it. Will keep experimenting since this is my go-to varnish and I can't wait 6+mos for a painting to dry before it goes out.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Best Varnish I've found!
By J Lay

This is the best varnish I've used. It is easy to control and to see where you've varnished and the best thing is that there's NO SMELL!

Not as potent as other solvents but great for mediums and light removal of stained areas of your canvas. Clean up is solid with only the most stubborn and dried areas remaining.
nice non-glossy sheen

This is a nice alternative to the regular (glossy) Gamvar. It enriches any flattened out colors, it's easy to apply and dries relatively quickly. I really like the degree of sheen that this provides.
Good product, a little pricey, and follow instructions!

I suggest looking at the YouTube video by gramlim on how to apply. The first time a used it I put it on too thick and the painting was full of streaks. I has to remove it and start over putting it on very very thin. Worked great then. No smell at all! The main reason I tried it because it is safe to use on a painting in just a few weeks.
Masterful results, Awesome time saver

I love how this varnish makes brings my paintings up to a gorgeous finished look. It also dries so fast, it allows me to spend more time painting and much less time with the varnishing process. I can ship my paintings so much faster. Seriously cant imagine life before this stuff.

It's good, goes on easy. My only complaint is that it's in a plastic bottle, which looks and feels cheep. This should be in glass!

Finally, an oil varnish that can be applied when paint is touch dry. It is easy to apply, lower odor, and looks great, no streaks. Highly recommend.

I painted two coats of gamvar varnish over a tile that I painted with alcohol ink. It did not run and is is very shiny. It looks great.
Gamvar is good.
