Welcome to dickblick
Developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Gamblin Gamvar Gloss Varnish saturates and gives greater depth to the colors in your painting and gives your work a unified and protective semi-gloss surface.
Virtually odorless, premixed, and ready to apply, Gamvar Gloss goes on water-clear, stays water-clear, and can be easily and safely removed with Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits.
Gamvar Gloss can be applied with a brush when the thickest areas of your painting are thoroughly dry and firm to the touch. Spray application is not recommended.
The 4.2 oz size covers approximately 80 square feet (7.5 square meters). The 8.5 oz size covers approximately 160 square feet (15 square meters). The 16.9 oz size covers approximately 320 square feet (30 square meters).
To achieve different finishes, you can also use Gamvar in Matte or Satin. Gamvar Matte reduces surface sheen while maintaining the deepest values in your painting. Gamvar Satin saturates the colors in your work but dries to a lower gloss level compared to original Gamvar Gloss.
Note — Original formula Gamvar Varnish is now called Gamvar Gloss. The formula hasn't changed, just the name.

Nice satin finish
Comments about Gamblin Gamvar Varnish:
This is a nice product. I like the no fumes..... It can dry a bit streaky though, so you really need to blot it back. Great finish, if there are no streaks.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Careful how you use this.. I work on panels, and the coverage was far too think when I laid them flat on a table. Later I applied, well shook, to a panel on an easel with at about a 75 degree lean. Great results. One coat only, as it was "satin".

I recommend Gamvar all the Time!
I love Gamvar! It doesn't smell, dries fairly quickly (use a thin coat), and best of all, you can apply it to paint that's dry, not cured for 6-12 months like my old varnish. This is the best product!
Glad to find these products at fair prices

Great Matte Final Varnish
from Readstown, WI
I don't like a glossy picture, harder to see and you have to move around to see it because of the gloss, with this matte varnish you solve these problems and are able to see the picture from any angle.

A practical and useful varnish.

Gamblin Satin Varnish
By Professional Educator/artist
The Satin Varnish dried very unevenly, even after two coats. The Company's website has excellent instructional videos which I followed to the letter. I ended up having to use gloss to even out the surface. The Gamvar Gloss worked well and it isn't as shiny as other varnishes.Love all Gamblin products, but Satin is the first one I would not recommend.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the Gamvar Satin. This particular varnish should be applied as a single, very thin layer. If your surface has an uneven sheen or absorbency, correct this prior to varnishing by oiling out, and then the single application of Gamvar will appear uniform. For more information on oiling out, or for with assistance with any products we offer, we hope you'll feel welcome to reach out to our Product Information Team. Product Specialists are available weekdays from 8am - 5:30pm CST at 1-800-933-2542 or email@example.com, and they're happy to work with you!
Don't have to wait months to varnish oil paintings

I like being able to varnish my oil paintings without having to wait months for them to dry thoroughly. This is the first time I'm using Gamvar, and I will be buying it again.

I use this as a finishing coat for oil paintings. It's great because you can varnish an oil with this as soon as it is dry to the touch, no need to wait extra weeks or months. Gives the painting a nice overall sheen and livens up the colors.
Gamvar low gloss
from West tisbury ma
This is a new product and the first time I've used it. It gives a low gloss finish, goes on smoothly and drys evenly. I like it.
