Used for oil on panel. I'd been using Gamblin's Wax for a matte finish, but new work needed a glossier look. It's easy to use, dries within a day and you don't have to wait 6 months to varnish. Must apply VERY thin. As always, Gamblin's how-to video and website were very helpful.

I have been painting full time as a profession for over 4 years before I started varnishing my oil paintings. The main reason I didn't varnish my work is because it was usually sold within a couple of months of being painted. I needed a varnish that I could apply within a few weeks to my oil paintings instead of waiting 6 month to a year.

The finish is so nice and even, I would consider it a semi-gloss. It even helps out with "oiling out" problems. I no longer need to oil out my paintings, instead I just apply a single coat of Gamvar varnish a once the painting is dry to the touch. The varnish drys very quickly, usually within 48 hours of application. Bottom line: Gamvar is my varnishing solution. It makes the whole process that much easier.

I tried Gamvar varnish for the first time a couple of years ago and have not looked back. The packaging and directions are very easy to follow and the results of a fairly quick drying varnish with a nice sheen are easy to achieve. The Gamblin site is also very helpful with a demo video showing how easy it is to use. I recommend this to former students and fellow painters.
