Gamvar is a synthetic resin gloss varnish developed by conservators at the National Gallery. It can be used on acrylic paintings as well as oils.

Gamvar is a synthetic resin varnish with a high refractive index similar to that of natural resins. Colors are fully saturated to bring out the best in the painting.

Unlike varnishes made from natural resins like damar and mastic, Gamvar does not yellow with age or become more difficult to remove. It contains a UV stabilizer and offers some measure of protection to less lightfast pigments, depending on how thickly it is applied.

Includes both a 5.4 oz (160 ml) solvent bottle and a 5.4 oz resin mixture jar.

Caution — Follow safety instructions carefully. Not suitable for use by children. Shipping restrictions apply to hazardous materials.

My Go-To Varnishing Solution

I have been painting full time as a profession for over 4 years before I started varnishing my oil paintings. The main reason I didn't varnish my work is because it was usually sold within a couple of months of being painted. I needed a varnish that I could apply within a few weeks to my oil paintings instead of waiting 6 month to a year.

The finish is so nice and even, I would consider it a semi-gloss. It even helps out with "oiling out" problems. I no longer need to oil out my paintings, instead I just apply a single coat of Gamvar varnish a once the painting is dry to the touch. The varnish drys very quickly, usually within 48 hours of application. Bottom line: Gamvar is my varnishing solution. It makes the whole process that much easier.

I tried Gamvar varnish for the first time a couple of years ago and have not looked back. The packaging and directions are very easy to follow and the results of a fairly quick drying varnish with a nice sheen are easy to achieve. The Gamblin site is also very helpful with a demo video showing how easy it is to use. I recommend this to former students and fellow painters.

Thought having to mix the 2 parts would be an issue, but no problem. Nice smooth sheen, drys in a few hours. Will buy again, recommended.
