Leaves a nice surface to paint on.
from Ventura, CA
Comments about Fredrix Premium Gesso:
Fredrix Gesso is a nice product to use, it leaves a nice surface with plenty of tooth to start a painting on. The gesso is clumpy straight out of the container so it needs a bit of water and quite a bit of mixing by hand in order to have a smooth creamy product to apply. A little elbow grease yields a nice gesso.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Terrible for wood panels
from Oakland, CA
I thought I could cut the steep price of premium gesso by using some of this. I'm priming Birch panels and this has so much water in it that it raises the wood grain horribly. It seems like people like it fine for canvas, but don't use it for wood.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Old Masters would have loved this stuff!
from New Orleans, La.
I create sculpture consisting of found and re-purposed materials, along with raw wood. In addition I build Spanish Colonial inspired furniture. In both instances I depend on Fredrix Gesso to provide a stable, permanent ground for paint application from oils to watercolor. It provides excellent coverage and a really great tooth for holding your strokes. It gives me an old world craftsman authenticity for starting paintings the right way and to my distressed furniture as I work surfaces to expose underlying layers of paint and gesso. The small mouth container also a winner as it eliminates waste. An excellent product. Tom Woodin

Awesome for super smooth canvas
By SR Sandpaint
from South Dakota
So I was a little hesitant to buy this after reading some of the reviews. I will say this you have to shake/ mix the contents of the bottle well before using and yes it is more liquidy, but I can get the most smooth amazing canvas after 2-3 coats and with very little sanding. I love this stuff!!! so amazing. I am guessing this is the gesso they use on their canvases. I know it sounds like a lot of work to gesso and then sand, but I might sand a 16X20 for 30 seconds to a minute at most. I find this makes a very smooth canvas and really makes the application of the paint go on much better and I am able to get much more detailed even on an inexpensive canvas. For the price it really is very reasonable I have done about 8 canvases of varying sizes with this and I just love it!!!

Fredrix quality, but not what I expected
I like to build texture when gessoing my panels, but while this is a quality prodoct , it is the consistency of heavy cream, making it impossible to build texture. Also, it will not cover in one coat, requiring two to three coats.

Good thinner for dense gesso
By Lindley Karstens
from Desert Hot Springs, CA
I find most premium gesso too thick. I don't want to sand the surface. I want to slap on a few coats and have an opaque canvas with a good tooth for acrylics. So I thin the thicker ones down with water and some kind of medium, which is expensive and worrisome because too much water would lead to cracking. Adding this to extend the thicker gesso is the perfect solution. If you are priming paper, the Fredrix is an okay ground on its own. If you're priming canvas, this can be used to extend the extra thick gesso and make it more spreadable. It's perfect for my need. I wouldn't recommend it as a stand-alone product for priming canvas.
