Fredrix Paint Boards with Belgian Linen
from Philadelphia, PA
Comments about Fredrix Paint Boards:
The Fredrix Paint Board with Belgian Linen is a nearly indispensable part of my studio practice. For nearly 5 years, I have used these boards in the studio and en plein air. They have been employed as supports for preparatory oil studies & oil sketches and for sustained, multi-layer paintings. Generally, after a light sanding with a 220 grit sand paper, I place an acrylic toned ground on them before painting in oils. The acrylic toned ground adheres well to the support's acrylic priming and provides an ideal support for subsequent layers of oil paint application. In much of my painting my brush calligraphy and painting application benefit from a rigid support and this board provides that. Also, the tooth, texture, and absorbency of the Belgian Linen are ideal for my painting handling & application. [Have yet to try the "Mixed Media" fabric.] I paint on a number of various prepared support: mounted linen on panel, Masonite, wood panel, stretched linen, etc., and use these boards for my artwork, dimensions in the range of 8 x 10 – 16 x 20 inches. Two notes of concern: Do not know how well the core would withstand a steady or heavy rain. On occasion it has had rain or snow on it with no apparent harm done. Also, the core is sturdy but not invulnerable, it can be squashed somewhat on its edges if dropped or packed carelessly. Similar to most painting supports care must be given in the transport, use, and storage. In a note of comparison with a similar product the Fredrix Pro Series Belgian Linen Boards, which I also use, I prefer the 3/4" board for several reasons. It does not warp which the 1/8" boards may do and for my purposes the Belgian linen support on the 3/4" board is superior. Last, my framer finds the framing of these 3/4" boards easier, in most cases, than the 1/8" paint boards.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I will be buying more in the future!
from Sandy, Utah
I've been looking for a quality, professional, surface for some time. These canvases place a hard panel and a linen canvas together beautifully and enables me to use the type of frame I choose (float). The linen boards have a wonderful surface texture for the oils I use and the mixed media surface is perfect for the watercolors. They are clean, flat and not heavy at all and doesn't warp with water.

A new adventure
By Don the dauber
from San Anselmo, CA
The Fredrix paint boards are enirely new to me and I'm quite impressed with their quality. I enjoy the sturdiness and the perfectly prepared surface. The boards accept any medium andlayering in gel mediums and collage techniques is so much easier than working on a a flexible stretched canvas. I am a convert!
easy to work with
Love how easy it is to work with this product. I like to do painting and drawing on the same canvas, and since this is a board, it is easy to draw on. Also it's not a thin flimsy board that will warp, it a thick board that stays flat and can be hung easily with screw eyes.

Multi-Media Boards are gr8 4 PleinAir!
By Annie Strack
These canvas boards from Fredrix have a 100% archival cotton canvas surface, which is gallery wrapped and primed with a multi-media gesso that is ready to use with oils or water based media such as acylics or watercolors. The panels are strong and durable, and yet very lightweight. Unlike stretched canvas, these won't dent or puncture during extreme plein air painting conditions. These boards are also perfect for artists who need firm support for heavy bodied applications of mediums, such as thick layers of paint, plaster, or other impasto techniques. I love that the panels are a standard depth of 3/4 of an inch thick, and gallery wrapped -- so I can paint the edges and hang them without frames. The surface is completely compatible with all watermedia, too -- so I can use my favorite techniques for watercolors. I can easily use them to create triptychs and other multi-panel installations in watercolors or other mediums. And just when I thought it couldn't get any better -- the lightweight core of this product is composed of recycled and eco-friendly materials. That just makes me love this product even more! I'm so glad these panels were gien to me as a gift - I use them all the time!

Good Surface, Bad Durability
By Oil Painter
from Portland, OR
I really enjoyed painting on this surface. The only drawback is my painting has only been moved a few times and the corner has become damaged.I just didn't realize how delicate they were. The core is similar to styrofoam, so the corners could use some support.I personally need something a bit more durable.
Might become my favorite support!
from NY, NY
Tried the Fredrix mixed media board for the first time, and I love it! It's as rigid as hardboards and wood panels but MUCH lighter, cheaper, and (assuming the "eco" label isn't a marketing strategy) better for the environment! I always do additional prep, no matter what labels on pre-prepared supports state, and I did the same here. The surface of this board took to my acrylic ground so well that I probably won't bother for the next piece. Great tooth. The only drawbacks: the corners should be better protected (one corner on mine got a little squashed in transit), no hanging hardware, and limited sizes
Perfect for Portraits

Love the way it handles acrylics. Beautiful portraiture possible with such a fine tooth. Light weight. Should have bought all they had at my local store. No way to get except on line...still a good buy but now I have to pay shipping.

Best Support I Ever Used
from Plainfield, IL.
This gives you the best of both worlds. I have always liked the rigid feel of painting on a board, but when underpainting, I had to use a very soft touch or the board shows through. I like a stretched canvas because of the way it accepts the paint. These nature core boards are fantastic. It gives the rigid control of a board with the gentle tooth and feel of a stretched canvas. Fredrix hit a home run with this product. Only problem, the stores are not carrying it anymore. Only online. I went to my Wheaton store, found out these boards were on clearance and bought them out. I paint with oils, you need to try them for yourself.
