These canvases are well-stretched and well-primed, but...the weave is not as smooth as I would like, and the canvas is really too thin to be professional. Compared to painting on heavy 10 or 12 oz. canvas, this canvas feels like you're painting on paper. I would love to see Fredrix offer a heavy 12 oz. pre-stretched canvas with a smoother weave. I know that I and many other serious painters would pay more for something that is truly professional.

I ordered a few of these by mistake. I thought I was ordering standard stretched canvas. They hung around my studio for a while because I assumed they were too smooth. I then had a realist still life project and I decided to give the blue label a try. I paint with synthetic mongoose bristles which is a perfect fit with the blue labels. I can see whey portrait artists like these so much. You can really show the details without having to fight against a strong weave. I will definitely use again when the project calls for a smooth, quality surface.

I try to keep the price affordable for my portrait customers. While I give them the option of the more expensive Linen canvas, these smooth cotton canvases make it possible for people to have a work of art that ordinarily they could not afford. The surface is nice and even, the canvases are perfectly stretched. I am now ordering them in bulk!

The tight weave of this canvas makes it perfect for painting details in portraits. The price was right for this high quality product and Dick Blick offers the best discounts. I also appreciate that I can buy one canvas at a time when I recieve a commission, as opposed to having to buy packages of 6, as other companies require.

I love working with two types of canvas: linen and Fredrix Blue Label. The Fredrix canvas is ultra-smooth and great for portraits and landscapes. It really lends itself to the sgraffito technique.
