Albrecht Dürer pencils contain the highest quality pigments for unsurpassed lightfastness. Color laydown is buttery smooth, and blending is effortless when wet. Color effects become permanent when dry.

Pencils are manufactured with extra-thick 3.8 mm leads that are break-resistant and fully water soluble. These leads provide sharp, fine lines and superior point retention.

Leads are housed in barrels of premium California cedar wood with SV (secure-all) bonding to strengthen the lead and help prevent breakage. Pencils are pre-sharpened.

Albrecht Dürer Watercolor Pencils are available in 120 brilliant colors that are part of a unique color matching system that encompasses all Faber-Castell art and graphic products. Match the color index numbers of any two Faber-Castell products for color compatibility. Use them with other Faber-Castell pencils and drawing products in mixed media projects.

I purchased the full spectrum 120 color set. At first, the price tag scared me off a bit, but after reading all the reviews on these pencils, I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and dive in head first. I am so incredibly happy that I did! Any previous buyers remorse I had immediately disappeared after I used these pencils for the first time.

The pencil goes down smooth and after you add water, the color just pops right off the page. They layer like a dream and are still workable after they dry (unlike the Inktense which are permanent once dry). I also don't have to sharpen them very much, a little goes a long way!

The only thing I don't like is that open stock is not sold in store, so I will have to keep a close eye on when I get low on a color so I can re-order it.

If you're on the fence about buying these, put your fear away! It's a lot of money, but the quality surpasses the price tag. Get your credit card out now and head to the check out!

I am a watercolorist and have used many different watercolor pencils. I received these pencils as a gift from my sister. I have used them for my work and find the degree of softness to hard is nice and the colors are true. However, on the down size these pencils are hard to sharpen. I had difficulty finding a sharpener they would fit into, and several of the 24 pack had problems with the wood - where you would find the pigment breaking after sharpening.

How I use them:
Always using Canson 100 (either side) I wet the paper first and then draw into it or
Grind it through a tea strainer or the sceen top of a sprouting jar (like this best) and dissolve it with distilled water to paint with traditionally.
Apply the pigment after watered down as above with a brush, then add more pigment over that by grinding the pencil tip straight from the strainer over the painted paper.
Works great in cosmetic spray bottles from the dollar store as there's little filler to gum the sprayer up.
Are outstanding on a speedball board. I'm trying Yupo paper next.

I bought these pencils as a gift for my Mom, and she's thrilled. The set is very complete, and you can order individual replacements over time, rather than having to re-purchase the complete set. They're packaged well - in fact, she's going to leave the pencils in the trays they came in, rather than having to find another way to store them. The shipping from Dick Blick was great as well; the pencils arrived earlier than estimated.

I started using the Faber Castell watercolor pencils because they have the old standard sanguine colored pencil. This allowed me to experiment with doing drawings of people and landscapes in the style used by Rembrandt. They worked so well that I now have the set of 120 colors.

I love the ease of blending and the controllable pressures for varying shades. Works very well with my Faber-Castell artist pens and easy to obtain desired affects with water brushing. A good solid product. I highly recommend.

Responsive dry and nice wash when wet

These are nice pencils. The colors lay out nicely when applied dry and produce a nice wash when wet. But beware once the wash dries, it is difficult to lift out a highlight (unlike pan or tube watercolours). I really like the use of standard names (burnt umber, raw sienna, ultramarine blue, etc) to identify colors. These pencils are encased in wood which is a natural product. I am pretty sure it was the exception but one pencil arrived with a split in its wooden case. It is not a problem now but may become a problem when I have to sharpen the pencil.

I've tried all of the different brands of watercolor pencils and these are my favorite. They're very creamy and can almost look like paint even when used dry. I wasn't a big fan of the metallic though. It was hard and the color would barely come off the pencil with very little "metallic" effect.

These pencils blend extremely well. I use them for collage and painting my faces. I won't buy any other brand but this again. I have tried many others but these, as well as, Inktense are the very best in the market.
