Enkaustikos offers a variety of waxes useful for encaustic painters, as well as artists working in other media. Unlike wax mediums, these waxes do not contain Damar Resin.
Carnauba Wax — Enkaustikos Carnauba Wax is a light, pale yellow wax from the leaves of a palm tree. Add this wax to encaustic paint to raise its melting point. Using Carnauba Wax will result in a harder, more durable paint film. Adding too much of this wax may result in cracking of the paint. Carnauba Wax is sold in thin flakes and melts at 187°–190° F (86°–88° C).
Impasto Wax — This is a blend of translucent white microcrystalline wax and U.S. Pharmaceutical Grade Beeswax. It is used for adding dimension to encaustic paintings, to build texture quickly, and for sculptural surfaces. Because Microcrystalline Wax yellows over time, use Impasto Wax in an under layer. Proper ventilation should be observed due to the vapors released from the
Luster Wax — Luster Wax is whiter, clearer, and can be used as an alternative to Carnauba Wax. It is a high quality, synthetic wax derived from coal. Luster Wax is not petroleum based and melts at 205° F (96° C). Add only a small amount of this wax to encaustic paint because the high melting temperature may cause the paint to burn. Luster Wax is sold in small granules that are easy to melt.
Microcrystalline Wax — This wax is more flexible than paraffin, with a melting point of 170°–180° F (77°–82° C). Use it to build layers and add dimension to encaustic paintings. Because Microcrystalline Wax yellows over time, use it in an under layer. Proper ventilation should be observed due to the vapors released from the
Slick Wax — Slick Wax is not suitable for use as a painting medium. Its intended use is for cleaning purposes only. Slick Wax eliminates the need for solvents in the studio. Simply keep a tin of melted Slick Wax available on the hot palette during the painting process. To move from one color to another, rinse your brush in the Slick Wax and wipe off any excess wax with a paper towel. The Slick Wax will have removed the color with ease. For those who like to mix colors on their palette, use the Slick Wax directly on the palette and with a wipe of a paper towel, you will have a nice clean surface to continue
