Hot Cakes are ready-to-use professional encaustic paints that come in a convenient reusable metal tin. Artist-quality colors made from the most beautiful pigments, the finest damar resin, and United States Pharmaceutical Grade (USP) beeswax, Hot Cakes paints contain no bleach or synthetic adulterants. Plus, because they're solvent-free, they require no turpentine or mineral spirits for cleanup.
Enkaustikos uses only the finest, artist-grade, lightfast pigments in the manufacture of Hot Cakes encaustic paints, which are engineered to withstand the heat requirements of the encaustic process without color shift. The company's milling operation employs state-of-the-art technology capable of shearing pigments to their smallest particle size to bring out their true personalities.
The design of the Hot Cakes tin makes these encaustic paints extremely easy to use. Simply unscrew the lid, place the metal tin onto a hot palette, and allow the paint to melt to 150°F to 175°F. The tin's flat bottom ensures that the paint will melt evenly. When finished, allow the paint to cool, and replace the lid to keep the paint clean and dust-free during storage. The tin's safety rim also makes cleaning the tin very easy so it can be refilled and reused.
Painting with Hot Cakes encaustic paints allows delicate layering of thin, transparent glazes and the creation of heavy impasto textures within minutes without concern for "fat over lean." Scraping to reveal underlying colors or add texture, surface modeling, and other techniques are accomplished easily with Hot Cakes. They're ideal for altered art, painting, printmaking, book-making, mixed media, sculpture, photography, and even digital art. Unlike other art mediums, encaustic paints can be reworked immediately or even years later simply with the addition of heat.
Enkaustikos Hot Cakes Encaustic Wax Paints were awarded "Best New Product" and "Best Packaging" at the 2009 NAMTA Convention.

Wonderful, easy to use product!

Comments about Enkaustikos Hot Cakes Encaustic Wax Paints:
I highly recommend these wonderful and easy to use encaustic cakes. Just remove the lid and sticker and then plop them down on your griddle and you are good to go. These encaustics are pricey (but that has been my experience in most encaustics), but they are well worth the price!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

paint comes in lidded melting pot, which is very convenient. I use the lids to mix colors.
Love for Enkaustikos
from Burke, VA
I love Enkaustikos Hot Cakes. I put them on my griddle and go to town. The color is rich and consistent. I really like the fact that they are in small metal containers. I use this wax on everything from paper, wood, metal, plexi glass, fabric and so on. As a mixed media artist I love this brand of encaustic wax.

Like the containers
from Waveland, MS
Highly pigmented - okay to dilute but not enough room in the container to do so. Price is high per ounce perhaps because it comes in a handy ready to use container. Like the containers. I like the texture of the R & F wax better.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Good results first try

Short learning curve, easy clean up. Took longer than expected for wax to heat up, but underneath the solid top, the wax was melted and usable. Colors mix beautifully. Order lots of wax medium and slick wax - they go fast. But the paints themselves are highly concentrated with pigment and a little goes a long way.
