Welcome to dickblick
Dorland's Wax Medium is a non-yellowing mixture of resin and pure beeswax that strengthens oil paint film against shrinkage and cracking while sealing out dirt, air, and moisture.
Dorland's improves the luminosity and clarity of colors. It adds translucency to oil paints, making them more brilliant.
It can also be used as a final coat on dry paintings, metal sculpture, wood carvings, and antiques. Since it is made with pure beeswax, it is perhaps the most authentic final treatment for fine wooden furniture and woodwork, both antique and modern,
Mix directly with the color before applying it to the painting. No heating is required. It can be buffed to a gloss finish, and thins with turpentine or mineral spirits.

I like Dorland's because it can be used either cold or for encaustic technique.

This cold-wax medium is a product I have recommended numerous times to both fellow artists and students. It's versatile, excellent for building texture, and easy to use!

I teach a class using cold wax so tried the Dorlands brand this time as a bit less expensive than Gamblins brand. Do not like the very soft consistency. Does not provide the structural quality Gamblin's does.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this medium. As you've found, the Gamblin has a "shorter rheology" which results in more dramatic texture, whereas the Dorland's is longer, more buttery. Although these two are similar, artists often distinctly prefer one or the other. Love this stuff. I use it to put a finish on watercolor paintings.
I would buy this again
Fantastic for mixed media with oils. Enjoying all the possibilities that this product provides. I find this a much better alternative to encaustics.

The first time I've used this product. Used it to wax a woodcarving carved in butternut wood with beautiful results.
