Comments about Dexter Mat Cutter:
This is the first time I did any mat cutting & the cutter worked as explained. I was very satisfied with this device. It may not be professional work, was very close. I'm now looking for other work to use it on.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The fact that it cuts both 90 degree angles (i.e. straight cuts), and any other angle within the range of the length of blade and turn of the rod, is wonderful.

I've had a Dexter mat cutter for years, but couldn't find the blades near me - Blick to the rescue!

took my first art class and learned about the Dexter. Now I spend my days mounting photos of grandchildren. Matts are so easy to cut and have those lovely beveled edges
Actually, I purchased Dexter replacement blades

I purchased Dexter replacement blades since they also fit my Alto mat cutter. Alto is apparently out of business, but it's nice they designed their cutter so that other brands will work.

It took me WAY too long to figure out how to use this thing, when it's really quite easy. I can't remember if directions just weren't included, or if I threw them away.Hold clear plastic insert in place while turning black knob to loosen. Remove the clear plastic insert, replace it with a blade, use the black knob to tighten.Definitely test it out on a scrap piece of board to understand how to cut with it, and from what direction you'll need to cut. You cut from the back of the mat, to prevent marring of the front, and I placed the blade so I could pull to cut.Using a self healing cutting mat, a t-square and some small clamps on a table, I had absolutely no problems AT ALL with any slippage and my mats are pretty close to perfect. SO PLEASED.This mat cutter is large and very easy to handle - I remember using smaller ones in college to cut mats and they were so finicky and slipped easily. A+++ will use again.
Easy, fast, and good value

I actually only purchased replacement #3 blades for this cutter which I have had for decades. Shipment arrived promptly and at a good price. Cutter works wonderfully for small batch quantities and is almost foolproof to use.

These are the blades that fit old school Dexter mat cutters. They are just the thing, if that's what you have! I was so happy to find Blick carries them as I couldn't find them locally.
happy w this simple tool

cut very straight, wasn't hard to figure out. A little technique required but not too difficult, just follow the directions and practice on some scrap first. Pays for itself after cutting one big matte. Use the cardboard that your matte is mailed in to cut the matte. anchor with masking tape and have a straightedge.
