Welcome to dickblick
The chunky shape of these extra-large graphite blocks makes them captivating, intuitive, and great fun to use.
Available in a variety of rich, dense colors, Derwent XL Graphite Blocks can be used for everything from sensitive line work and subtle blending to expressive marks and deep tonal work. Create different marks with the sides, edges, and corners — or use an embossing tool to create lines and add texture. You can even add water to the mix for splashes and washes.
XL Graphite Blocks have a distinctive, soft feel and a silvery sheen. They're also very tactile, so you can use your finger to smudge and move the color around.

Fun to use, not much else like them
from Jefferson City, MO
Comments about Derwent XL Graphite Blocks:
These are super fun to use, easy to cover a lot of surface area in very little time. Obviously not great for detail work since they're very chunky and the edges tend to chip off when you press too hard, but you can get some decently thin lines out of them. The two regular graphite ones don't mix as well with the other four. I would like to have a lighter blue included in the set. I find that landscapes practically make themselves with these, to me they are extremely pleasing to use.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love this product!!!!
from San Diego, CA
I love the range of colors and the TWO blocks of untinted graphite. I'm a big fan of graphite leads and have several lead holders loaded up and ready on my mark making table. This product has joined them. I use them to add texture to whatever media i am using in the moment. With these blocks i keep two sides dedicated to wet work and two for dry. I load my brush from the block itself however i also work with waterbrushes after i have put the dry graphite onto the paper. We can create all kinds of marks with this from very thin and fine to the width of the block itself. Like Barbie, the blocks have accessories available - a gripper for tidy hands, a Groove Cube which etches lines into the block surface to make different marks and finally a planer, the Sprinkler, over which you drag the block to produce instant graphite powder wherever you want it. I would very much like to try that planer. I feel like a new graphite world has appeared before me and i'm quite delighted!!!

A 24x36 inch drawing on Arches paper using much water came out great ...such fun! I could do broad washes and fine lines. I will use these a lot. I have already given a set to a friend to try.
all the claims are TRUE!

IM A BIG FAN OF BIG GRAPHITE! These bars may be a bit more than the rest of the graphite bars out there but they make up for the price with the size and colors, the green is earthy and translucent and bright all at the same time, the blue is like nothing else! the browns are nice and the blacks are black. Add water and a brush on some sturdy paper and just experiment and find out how you like to use them.
