Outstanding for Quick Drawings
from Centralia WA
I use these large chalks in a life drawing class that emphasizes quickly putting down basic features. I find that the large surface allows maximum areas to be laid down along with the edges for subtle detailing. I particularly like the gold color and have purchased refills of this one. The metal box is lined with rubber dividers and keeps the chalk intact. I did add a rubber band to keep it closed while in my carryall.
A good Stretch for me
I was searching for Colored Compressed Charcoal options in something other than the standard black and found this set of oversized charcoal. Other orders I have placed online for charcoal sticks have arrived broken in half from the shipping, so I figured these fat sticks might have a better chance. They come in a metal case with rubber slots inside to hold each individual stick and even have a finger hole to allow easy access to pick up. First issue solved. The colors are very different, more muted and soft compared to the blacks, sepias and umbers that are more standard, but they resulted in a great contrast. In my life drawing class, I now use these sticks to lay down the base shapes then add accents with the finer and darker sticks for a stunning effect. My teacher noted that I had reached a new level in my quick drawings (10 minutes or less). Success!
I was very surprised!
from Sibley MO
I was amazed with the versatility of the Derwent graphite and charcoal blocks. I ordered them because I have arthritis in my hands and was looking for a product that would be easy to use. I spite of the chunk in essence, you can get a sharp line. I am very pleased to have them in my lineup of graphite and charcoal pencils.
Love the Intensity of Color & Wet/Dry Use
from Chicago, IL
I use these primarily as background for my collage pieces. Love using them wet; the intensity of the colors really pop, and you can achieve great results by blending and layering.

graphite blocks are an awesome product. feels almost like sculpting and I can work fast. charcoal blocks I am less enthusiatic. however, can use them to tighten up graphite work when needed.

Blackest black charcoal made.
from Boston, MA
Large, expressive charcoal drawings with intense blacks. Have not used the graphite yet but imagine using the two together would be good. Don't use in the Living room!! Makes nice mess, best kept in the studio.
from Pine Grove, Pennsylvania
The charcoal and graphite(purchased both) were so much fun to work with. I especially loved using the graphite in my portrait drawings. They lay down smoothly, so that was definitely a plus. I would purchase them again.
