I use watercolor pencils mostly for sketches and studies. Derwent's New Formula watercolor pencils are fantastic. The old formula tended to be hard and inconsistent, most of the range wasn't lightfast and they were frustrating. The new formula is as soft as Prismacolors when used dry, has great pigment load and intensity, blends well and performs better than any other watercolor pencils I've ever tried with the possible exception of Supracolor Soft. Those are just as soft and pigment rich.

Check the Derwent home page for a lightfastness chart if you plan to do serious art to sell and choose your colors accordingly. The good news is that so much of the range is lightfast that it's not a hard choice to pick out the ones you need for serious framed painting.

I started with a 12 color review set and loved them. The colors in the small sets are well chosen for mixing - it has both a magenta and a violet so I could do floral subjects or anything I want with the small tin. Some small sets are frustrating in their range. I usually only buy 24 colors for small sets but recommend the 12 color set as a trial or outdoor set.

I use a Niji Waater Brush with them. These pencils re-wet easily, allowing lifting and lightening color after your painting has dried. Derwent Inktense becomes waterproof when dry, and these New Formula ones will keep up with the pigment strength so I have no problem using them together. I recommend them to everyone I know. They are what I always wanted watercolor pencils to be and the price is very low for an artist grade product.

Okay, I wanted something I and the kids could color with and play with. The price of these was so good, I opted to buy them over regular colored pencils. The color lay down is nice and smooth, its easy to get good coverage wet or dry. I like the colors and they are all different from the ones in the Inktense set. They melt with just a damp brush. If you don't mind slight warping of the paper, you can get these to work even on copy paper! And the best part is they are open-stock so I can replace them as I use them.

I've used a variety of different brands of watercolor pencils and these are my general-use favorites. It depends on what type of line you need to make, how much space you need to cover, or what kind of color you're looking for. Different types of lines and color require different pencils.

Theses are not too firm or too soft and are easy to sharpen. They're nice and smooth and responsive to a wet brush.

The 36 pencil set set seems to be a little lacking in the earth tone & gray selection, but it's a good overall set.
