Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils offer a new twist on one of the earliest drawing mediums. Natural charcoal particles are mixed with a small amount of pigment and the finest clays to extend creative possibilities.
These tinted charcoal colors smudge and blend beautifully to produce deep, rich tones. Unwanted color can be lifted out quickly with an eraser. The pencils' natural water solubility creates delicate wash effects.
Tinted Charcoal Pencils are produced in 24 fabulous shades, including White for highlighting.

Comments about Derwent Tinted Charcoal Pencils:
Terrible!!! These do not work on newsprint paper. They feel scratchy , gritty like you are using a piece of random wood charcoal. When you apply them on drawing paper, the dust comes off all over and ruins your page, so they smudge and fade like crazy. Never dream of using it for figure drawing.I bought the 6-piece set and there was one of them ( the Lavender) that I could not get it sharpened, the lead seemed broken from the inside or it could be too soft to be sharpened . I have had no problem sharpening a ton of other charcoal pencils by a craft knife . You could say I threw away almost 2 dollars . Anyway, I would not use it even if I could sharpen it.Also, the paint job and letterpress are inferior. They feel unfinished and amature giving they are graded professional. Finally, the only good sides I can point out is that the wood quality is comparable to other brands, they are a little bigger than the classic orange General's charcoal pencils and it's a good idea of tinted charcoal
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with these pencils. A more substantial, toothier paper will give better results, and our Product Information Team is happy to discuss this further with you. Unique Product -- Very Nice!
By Tom, pencil artist
from Albany, NY
I teach drawing classes and like to find different products for my students to use. As far as I know, no one else makes tinted charcoal. They are just like any other charcoal pencil you might have used with a subtle hint of color. These are very nice for creating something a little out of the ordinary. Although charcoal and charcoal pencils are water soluble, they don't give off a clean look with water.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I recently picked up drawing again in the past two years and really like drawing with charcoal. I went to order my usual black and white charcoal pencils and found these tinted charcoal pencils. Now I have the color I love wiith the blendability of charcoal.

I have only played with these a little bit. The color seems subtle, but effective.

Derwent Products - Excellent - Both the Charcoal and Inktens

The charcoal water soluble pencils are used, sometimes in combination with the inktense pencils, for sketches and drawing. They create incredible effects.

I looked forever to find the right set of tinted charcoal pencils. I finally found this one at a great price. Once I submitted my order, it took only days to get it. It came just as expected. Works well, blends perfectly. The only con to me was the lack of vibrancy in the colors, which is also difficult to find. However, I still love them and love how smoothly the color is applied. Would recommend this product!
