Made in England, these high-quality pencils were designed specifically for the professional artist and designer. If you like the texture and blendability of Derwent Artists Pencils, but prefer a crisper, more precise drawing style, Derwent Studio Colored Pencils are for you!

All 72 pencils in the range are highly pigmented for maximum color purity. They share the same color core as Derwent Artists Colored Pencils, but have a slim, hexagonal barrel that's easy to grip. The 3.4 mm core sharpens to a fine point, producing a narrow color strip that's particularly well suited to detailed illustration work, such as botanical studies, architectural drawing, and graphic design.

Each hexagonal wooden pencil is strikingly finished in matte black with a color-coded end. Pencils are pre-sharpened. Studio sets are packaged in a handy hinge-lid tin box.

Set of 12 — Includes Deep Cadmium, Orange Chrome, Deep Vermilion, Crimson Lake, Imperial Purple, Spectrum Blue, Prussian Blue, Mineral Green, Grass Green, Golden Brown, Copper Beech, and Ivory Black.

Set of 24 — Includes the colors in the Set of 12, plus Lemon Cadmium, Rose Pink, Light Violet, Kingfisher Blue, Emerald Green, May Green, Olive Green, Brown Ochre, Terra Cotta, Blue Gray, Gunmetal, and Chinese White.

Set of 36 — Includes the colors in the Set of 24, plus Straw Yellow, Scarlet Lake, Flesh Pink, Magenta, Dark Violet, Blue Violet Lake, Ultramarine, Jade Green, Cedar Green, Bronze, Vandyke Brown, and Raw Sienna.

After using Derwent Studio pencils for many years, and always being happy with the consistently vibrant results, with easy blending to boot, I went a good length of time without doing any illustrative work in pencil. Having landed a big project, I've whistled through my old supply in no time, bought replacements, and am shocked at the difference.

The Studio range now bears no relation whatsoever to what I have been used to. Hard, and brittle, you have to gently and patiently coax the dull flat colours on to the page. They are waxy, and pale and refuse to blend. I have no idea at what point Derwent changed the composition of these once fine pencils, but now I'd be hard pushed to recommend them to a single soul.

I imagine they'd be adequate if you wanted to lay down very subtle colours in small areas, but otherwise I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

These Studio pencils are harder and are good for subtle shade work. But they don't have the dense vibrant color of Koh-I-Noor tricolors or Caran d'Aches. They also have a bit of variability with regard to finish quality of the printing and lacquer (which obviously doesn't affect their drawing quality; but the pigment quality is variable also: some are creamy and others are dry and clayey. They don't really suit my work.

If you need really subtle coloring on a very smooth (white) paper you can get good results. It just won't be a super saturated and vibrant art work.

I would only recommend them for special situations, not for general illustration.

They offer a technique that is more precise and controlled than Prismacolor pencils. The 36 color set is the one i bought and i find that it offers all the colors necessary. Will buy again.

Compared to Derwent ColourSoft, Watercolor, and Inktense pencils, these colors are dull. The black is grey, and the other colors appear faded when laid down next to the other types of Derwent pencils. They do not blend well, either, compared the other Derwent lines. Returned a 48-count tin. Very disappointed in these, and surprised. The Watercolor pencils even use the same numbers/names, and the colors are the same at all.

I really like Derwent Studio Colored Pencils (basic set of 72). I appreciate the fact that I am able to purchase individual replacement colors, also, because I use certain colors for my drawings more than others. I enjoy this art medium because the colors are vibrant, deep, and blend beautifully. I like using colored pencils because they are so neat, clean, and convenient. No messy clean up with colored pencils.

These pencils are the kid sister of Derwent Artists; same pigments but thinner leads and "only" 72 colors. The classical Derwent color range includes soft blues and lots of brown. Soft and smooth but I can't understand why they are more expensive than Derwent Artists: buy them instead.
