Comments about Derwent Pastel Pencils:
Sampled a variety of pastel pencils recently, and tried them all side by side (Conte, Cretacolor, Caran d'ache, Faber Castell, Stabilo, Derwent), blending each together with charcoal and white pastel on the same brand/tooth of art paper for careful comparison. The Derwent blue I sampled was ... eh, okay. It is third from left in the picture. Saturation seemed a notch lesser than competing brands, and the application/texture was very much at the "hard/sandy" end of the spectrum. It blended reasonably well with some patience and was usable, but instinctively it had a cheapest feel and least richness of any brand I tried. I selected another brand to purchase a full set from, but I would actually take Derwents over the highly priced Caran d'ache, because they are at least a relatively charcoal/pastel-like consistency, allowing general blendability with other brands and with black/white charcoal pencil. Caran d'Ache are basically oil pastels, from what I sampled, which are lovely, but which do not blend well with other pastel pencils or black/white charcoal.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I continue buying this product.
from Napa, CA
I have been using Derwent pastel pencils for years. I like being able to see all colors I can buy without having to drive a distance to buy them. The pencils work very nicely on sanded paper and allow me to work in tighter spaces when needed.
I loooove these
I bought many of these in grey tones to use with charcoal and I am in love. They aren't as soft as I thought they would be, nor too hard. They sharpen nicely and seem to be lasting well too, I'm really happy with these!

Excellent Quality Product
from Topeka, KS
I use pastel pencils with watercolors. This product is of supreme quality and the Blick service was most excellent as usual. The pencils come well protected and I have never had a delivery arrive damaged.

These are great pencils---would like to see more colors available, and I am very happy to see that they seemed to have improved the cores. The first batch I bought a few years back broke and were unusable. These seem to sharpen just fine.
Detail Pastel Pencils
from Riverdale, Maryland
I needed some pastel pencils for detail work on non-flat surfaces. I was recommended these by many people. I had went into a few art stores and tried a few other brands and they either didn't have enough pigment or were too hard. I found a great deal on Dick Blick while searching and decided to try the brand I was recommended. They are silky smooth, blend well and have intense color. I liked them so much I decided to buy a few more colors and will definitely buy more in the future.
Great colors and they don't break so easily
from Milton, FL
I do many "chalk" studies and paint a little. I want a chalk that the "lead" doesn't break easily and I need a variety of colors. I have used another very good product for years, but the "leads" kept breaking. I decided to make the switch to these chalks and ordered a set plus some individuals. They are also great for a pastel, so you can sketch in the main idea, and also handy for last minute detail "dabs".
